Memorial Day is Black History.
For Black Americans, it carries a history rooted in freedom, sacrifice, and remembrance.

One of the earliest Memorial Day commemorations was led by formerly enslaved Black people in Charleston in 1865, just weeks after the Civil War ended. They honored Union soldiers who died fighting against slavery by giving them proper burials, decorating their graves with flowers, singing spirituals, and marching in remembrance.

Nearly 200,000 Black soldiers served during the Civil War, many risking their lives for freedoms they themselves had not fully received.

Here in New Orleans, we understand the power of remembrance, second lines, honoring our ancestors, and carrying legacy through community. Today we honor the Black soldiers, freedom fighters, and generations who fought, served, and sacrificed while still demanding dignity, equality, and humanity.

Memorial Day is not just American history.
It is Black history.
It is liberation history.
And it deserves to be remembered.

BABY… y’all got QUESTIONS, so here’s the tea for the New Orleans Black Pride Community Festival 👀🌈☀️
✨ YES — the festival is family & kid friendly.
The park has a playground, so bring the little cousins, nieces, nephews, babies, and strollers. We love seeing community show up across generations.
Now listen… this IS Pride, there are adults outside, and we can’t control every conversation or environment around you — but we absolutely ask everyone to respect the space, respect each other, and keep the vibes loving and community-centered. 💛

YES, it’s outdoors at the park.
And YES, this is New Orleans… so it’s gonna be HOT. Hydrate, wear light clothes, bring your fan, sunscreen, and protect your peace AND your edges. 😭😂
-And before y’all ask:
Rain? The show still goes on, babe. This is New Orleans. We outside anyway.
Food vendors? YES.
Vegan options? ALSO YES.
Drinks? Absolutely.
You CAN bring:
✔️ Lawn chairs
✔️ Blankets
✔️ Tents/canopies
Please DO NOT bring:
❌ Outside food
❌ Glass containers

The festival is open to everyone, but this is intentionally a celebration centering LGBTQ+ folks and our community. Please enter the space with love, respect, and understanding.
-Security will be highly enforced throughout the festival, including armed security personnel helping us protect the space so our community can celebrate safely.
-Community resources will also be on-site, including STD/STI testing and wellness resources because Pride is also about care, health, and showing up for each other.

Now come outside, catch a vibe, support community, dance a little, eat good, and celebrate Black q***r joy the way ONLY New Orleans can.
