Amazing drive and fortitude

Courage was common , the greatest Generation for a reason.

After the arrival of General Patton's tanks and the breakthrough towards Bastogne on Boxing Day by William A. Dwight of the 37th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division, the paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division still had to defend Bastogne against German attacks. During the siege of Bastogne, the 26th Volksgrenadier division had more than 1000 casualties. But the German Colonel Kokott still commanded 9,000 German soldiers and they continued to put pressure on Bastogne. The casualty numbers of the American units continued to increase as a result of artillery fire, snipers, patrols and German attacks.

By Friday December 29, 1944 another 250 paratroopers were wounded, killed or missing. Because a breach had now been made in the German encirclement, it was also possible to supply the defenders of Bastogne. A column of 62 vehicles brought reinforcements, ammunition, rations and the mail and parcels for the paratroopers. There were 19 trucks belonging to the 101st Airborne Division that had not been able to reach Bastogne because of the encirclement, including veterans of the 101st division who had been left behind in France during the departure on December 18, 1944, because they were on leave in Paris or another city.

I cannot express how truly saddened I am that he is gone
Although it was inevitable, he was one of the few we hoped would be here for just a bit longer, just a few more years.

Alas my friend the lord has called you home to be with your family , your Brothers, and all those before you.

We will see you again one day.

Rest now my Friend.

Our hearts are deeply saddened as we share that our beloved Charles Norman Shay, who proudly served with the 1st Infantry Division during World War II, served with the 3rd Infantry Division during the Korean War and in the US AirForce during the Cold War, left this Earth for Heaven on December 3rd 2025 and has returned home to the Creator and the Spirit World.
He left us peacefully, surrounded by his family and his adopted family who adored him, holding the same grace, kindness and strength that defined his inspirational life.
He was an incredibly loving father, grandfather, father-in-law, and uncle, a hero to many, and an overall amazing human being.
Though our hearts are bleeding, we take comfort in knowing he is now reunited with his ancestors and at peace.
Charles leaves a legacy of Love, Service, Courage, Spirit, Duty and Family that continues to shine brightly.
May his gentle soul rest in God’s embrace.
We will always honor and remember Charles, and he will always be in our hearts!
We will communicate details regarding his burial in a few days.

“Grandfather Spirit, our loved one walks the star path,
Carry them gently on wings of eagles,
Let the ancestors welcome them with joy,
In the land where winter never comes.”

Gilbert "Choc" Charleston 🕊

Thank you for your service, Choc 🫡
