🌈Happy Pride Month! Continuing our Pride Month celebration, throughout June we will be posting native plants and wildlife that represent the Progress Pride Flag colors.

Red in the Progress Pride Flag stands for life, the fire of passion and the vitality of being authentically ourselves. To represent that energy, we’re featuring the striking bee-balm (Monarda didyma).

A top hummingbird plant, bee-balm is easy to grow and makes a lovely addition to any garden. Perfect for meadows and pollinator gardens, bee-balm’s bright red flowers will enhance any space.

Stay tuned as we explore a rainbow of colors this month! ❤️

Black in the Progress Pride Flag represents diversity, resilience and the beauty of Black LGBTQ+ communities. Today, we honor that legacy with the spicebush swallowtail (Papilio troilus).

Found throughout the eastern United States and parts of Canada, this striking butterfly is known for its dark wings and iridescent blue markings. The caterpillars are masters of camouflage and will resemble bird droppings, slowly maturing to look more like a snake as they get older.

Stay tuned as we explore a rainbow of colors this month! 🖤🌈

Brown in the Progress Pride Flag honors marginalized LGBTQ+ communities of color and highlights the need for racial equity and inclusion within the movement. Today, we’re celebrating that significance with the humble and resilient wood frog (Lithobates sylvaticus).

The wood frog is known for its ability to survive freezing temperatures. In winter, they can stop breathing and produce their own special “antifreeze” that prevents ice from damaging their cells.

Stay tuned as we explore a rainbow of colors this month! 🤎

🌿 Keynote Speaker Spotlight: Doug Tallamy, Ph.D. 🌿

We are honored to welcome Doug Tallamy, Ph.D., as the keynote speaker for this year’s Native Plant Conference!

Doug is the T.A. Baker Professor of Agriculture in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware and is widely recognized as one of the leading voices in the native plant and ecological landscaping movement. Over a 45-year career, he has authored more than 120 research publications and inspired countless homeowners, gardeners and conservationists to rethink the role their landscapes play in supporting biodiversity.

In his keynote presentation, How Can I Help? Saving Nature with Your Yard, Doug will answer some of the most common questions he receives from readers and audiences. Drawing from decades of research and experience, he will share practical ways each of us can help restore ecosystem function in our own communities.

Whether you manage acres of habitat or a small backyard garden, this keynote will leave you inspired and empowered to make a meaningful difference for nature.

Light blue in the Progress Pride Flag honors the transgender community and celebrates the spectrum of gender identity. Today, we’re pairing that meaning with the tall bellflower (Campanula americana). A gorgeous native that thrives in wet, shady and wooded environments, this striking flower stands tall in the forest, sometimes reaching up to 5 feet in height!

We are ONE WEEK away from this year's Native Plant Conference!

🌿 Speaker Spotlight: Dan Chase 🌿

We’re excited to welcome Dan Chase, Senior Fisheries Biologist and Director of Fisheries, Aquatics, and Design Discipline for Resource Environmental Solutions (RES), to this year’s Native Plant Conference!

Dan has spent more than 20 years working in mitigation, restoration and conservation efforts for imperiled fish and wildlife species throughout the western United States. He serves as the lead fisheries biologist for the Klamath River Renewal Project, the largest dam removal and river restoration project in U.S. history, where he has helped guide permitting, design, implementation and restoration efforts.

In his presentation, From Reservoirs to Rivers: A Look at the Klamath River Renewal Project Restoration Journey, Dan will share the story of the historic removal of four hydropower dams on the Klamath River in northern California and southern Oregon. Attendees will gain insight into the restoration strategies used on this ambitious landscape-scale project, lessons learned during implementation and updates on tributary restoration efforts completed in 2025.
