“This is precision medicine in Parkinson's disease.” — Dr. Thomas Tropea
What if a blood test could help researchers better understand who is at greater risk of developing dementia in Parkinson's disease?
A new study led by Dr. Thomas Tropea offers a promising glimpse of how that might become possible.
The study found that higher levels of a protein called P-tau217 in the blood were associated with a greater risk of cognitive decline in people with Parkinson's disease.
These findings could help researchers identify people at higher risk and design more focused clinical trials, moving Parkinson's research toward approaches that account for individual differences.
Research led by IND’s Dr. Thomas Tropea was recently highlighted by Dr. Connie Marras during the “Essential Highlights in Movement Disorders” session at the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS) Congress, bringing attention to its potential significance for the future of Parkinson's research.

Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) is a rare neurodegenerative condition, and there is still much to learn about what is happening in the brain.
IND is seeking adults ages 45–85 who have been diagnosed with PSP for specialized brain imaging research studies. The studies use PET imaging to help researchers better understand changes associated with PSP.
