Good Trouble Lives On is a national day of nonviolent action to respond to the attacks posed on our civil and human rights by the Trump administration and to remind them that in America, the power lies with the people. On July 17, the anniversary of Congressman John Lewis’s passing, we’re taking...

When the legislators said that taking away the mandatory discussion language would give ALL teachers a voice, they obviously weren’t talking about union members! This is what happens when our rights are stripped.

Posting this again
Just a reminder of who voted for this. I really do NOT care what side of the aisle someone is on as long as they support public education and can stand up to oppose this type of nonsense. It was bad enough that multiple people have said their representative stopped communicating with them.
This bill should have NEVER made it out of the House, much less out of committee.
Time for term limits and time to replace the ones who simply follow the crowd and parrot the same talking points they all use when ramming this through. Speaking from personal experience, over the years, so many educators have spent countless hours trying to get our message across, only to be ignored
EVERY
SINGLE
SESSION
for at least the last decade.

Great news….thanks to so many who opposed this from the start for your continued phone calls, emails, and meetings with legislators. We still have to face the fact that it passed in the House though. Time for some folks to be replaced in the Statehouse. But for today, this is great news.

We do have to keep the pressure on though. Keep contacting your Senator to oppose the parts of the bill that will be put in other bills.

Well, not a good day for public schools yesterday. Make no mistake about it though, what is happening has NOTHING to do with what is best for kids. It is no coincidence that similar bills in other states around the Country have VERY similar, or the EXACT same language as HB1134 does. Take some time to read how things went in the Senate Education Committee meetings regarding this bill. This is NOT AT ALL how the system is supposed to work. The Committee Chair overstepped his authority multiple times, not allow pictures or video, and severely limiting public comments about the bill. Over 150 people that signed up to speak were not given a voice. Then there is this from yesterday’s meeting where the House Education Committee Chair, Bob Behning testified in the Senate. Senator Eddie Melton is on the Education Committee as well.

A few people have asked…..here is how the members of the House voted. We do not care what side of the aisle a candidate comes from, we are simply looking for people who place a higher value on the public schools in our community than those that are currently in office and just simply toe the party line. There were several on both sides of the aisle that opposed this disastrous bill. Trust us when we say we have spent HOURS in conversations with local reps, and have gotten nowhere. They act like they are listening. It really is exhausting and frustrating to know that local concerns are not being heard. Time for some new people and term limits in our Statehouse.

Calling this….Logic from the Statehouse
Even though we like to think we pay attention tomwhat is happening in the Statehouse, some things happen out of sight.

With that, we learned more details about the SAT in Indiana:
for school accountability, schools MUST have 95% of their students take the SAT. It gets better......40% of a schools grade will be based on the scores the kids get. For the kids themselves, especially the ones not going to college, the scores mean nothing, but they still do count for 40% of the school grade....also, the benchmark for scores will not be known until AFTER all Indiana students that are juniors have taken it.
So yeah, that 95% does include MOST SPED students as well as ELL students. And ELL students will not even be allowed to get a translation of the questions. They have apps on their phones for regular classes, but cannot use them for the SAT.

I could add a few more colorful and descriptive words directed toward those in our Statehouse, but will restrain myself.

Statehouse Notes #356 from the Indiana Coalition for Public Education and Vic Smith

With only three days left in this General Assembly session, a dangerous threat to our state remains to be fixed. Education Scholarship Accounts are still in the budget bill, and the bill language does not protect Indiana from extremists, from criminals or from the sudden elimination of all standards and accountability.

Will you send messages today and tomorrow to your legislators and to party leaders who are deciding what will go into the budget about these looming threats and flaws that could be fixed with last minute additions to the bill language?

Fix the Flaws!

What are the glaring problems that have still not been fixed in the current budget bill language on Educational Scholarship Accounts?
