Please join us Wednesday, October 14th at 2 PM Eastern time on Zoom for a JewishGen/Museum of Jewish Heritage sponsored talk on "Caring for the Jewish Cemeteries of Poland":

Introduction: With perhaps 1,600 Jewish cemeteries in Poland and a Jewish community of fewer than 10,000 responsible for the burial places of over 1,000,000 of our ancestors, the task is immense and seemingly impossible. And yet, dedicated Polish Jews and non-Jews and worldwide supporters are doi...

Friends of Jewish Heritage in Poland is working with Andrychów descendants Robert McCabe and Perry Mittler to preserve and restore the town’s Jewish cemetery. Also involved in the work are Polish scholar Jacek Proszyk, on behalf of the Bielsko-Biała Jewish Community, and local supporter Jadwiga Janus.

The Andrychów Jewish cemetery was established in the first half of the 19th century, and it mostly endured through the Shoah, with over 600 matzevot from up to two centuries ago still present today.

To help maintain this cemetery into the future, preservation goals currently include repairing fencing, removing obstructive trees, and clearing the cemetery entrance. Also included in the work is preparing a history of the cemetery and the Jewish community of Andrychów, and uncovering and restoring a post-World War II memorial stone that sits in the center of the cemetery. Dr. Proszyk’s work is already leading to a detailed inventory and map of the surviving tombstones at the cemetery. We hope to be able provide access to his research on our website shortly.

To learn more about this project and support this work, please visit the Andrychów page on our site at:

With gratitude to Krzysztof Bielawski, FODŻ, and the district authorities for Kolbuszowa, we are pleased to report the district's replacement of the Kolbuszowa Jewish cemetery front retaining wall, which collapsed in Spring 2025. The front gate of the cemetery was also repainted as part of this project, which was sponsored in part by FJHP supporters David Ekstein, Renee Garbus, Zachi Shor and many others.

These photos show the gate and wall of the Jewish cemetery before and after repairs were made. The Kolbuszowa town seal still commemorates warm relations between Polish Jews and Polish Christians, and we are grateful for this collaborative effort to care for the Jewish cemetery in the town.

FJHP is proud to have begun supporting clean-up efforts by Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland - FODŻ at the Łomża Jewish cemetery, supported by the generosity of Gary and Sue Berman. The work at the cemetery is coordinated by volunteer Anna Moczydłowska. Łomża is home to two surviving Jewish cemeteries, both which date back to the 19th century and have hundreds of surviving matzevot.

Pictured is the Jewish cemetery in Łomża before and after the recent clean-up efforts. We are grateful to our supporters, partners, and volunteers who enable restorations like this across Poland.
