A big earthy ‘thank you’ to our volunteers, staff, board members, and partners who helped bring Rachel Carson’s wonder and wisdom about the living world to hundreds of children and adults across our region 💚

In a clip from her Spring:Story, award-winning filmmaker Mahera Omar shares her contagious sense of wonder along the living shores of Karachi, Pakistan. What Mahera notices, and helps us to see, is abundant evidence of a vibrant, wild shore, much like that witnessed up and down the Atlantic coastline by Rachel Carson many decades ago.

"Then in my thoughts these shores, so different in their nature and in the inhabitants they support, are made one by the unifying touch of the sea."
-- Rachel Carson, The Edge of the Sea

Mahera's full Spring:Story is available on our YouTube page 🙏🌊🙏

We are excited to share that Springsong Museum's Founder and Executive Director Rebecca Henson has been awarded a 2026-2027 Research Fellowship at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University. For us, the Beinecke is the single most important trove of primary source material: Rachel Carson's papers, including thousands of handwritten letters, field notes, manuscripts, and other treasures. Rebecca's research here will directly inform the substance of the story the Springsong will tell and how we tell it through our exhibits and programs.

As a public museum situated in the densely populated and accessible Silver Spring, Maryland, Springsong will share Rachel Carson's important and inspiring life, work, and legacy with new and diverse audiences. This opportunity to educate and inspire visitors of all ages brings with it significant responsibility, with a high bar set by Rachel Carson herself. Carson was committed to the highest level of trust and scholarship in her own research and communication with the public. While she was recognized and beloved for her ability to share facts through beautiful writing, for her, the integrity of those facts was paramount.

Rachel Carson's life and teachings are more extraordinary and relevant than most of us know. As an independent museum, Springsong's commitment to finding, collecting, and sharing this history is fundamental to our mission, even more so in these times of growing reliance on often inaccurate AI-generated "facts." Our research spans local oral history to in-depth, onsite archival material reviews at libraries across the country.

History has the power to connect us to important ideas, to place, and to one another; its value cannot be overstated. We are thrilled to deepen our historical footings through Rebecca's Yale Beinecke fellowship and cannot wait for our exhibits and programs to connect our visitors to Rachel Carson through this incredible resource.

✨🐚📚 As we prepare to share a new batch of Spring:Stories in this new year, we wanted to repost 2025’s most watched reflection. J. Drew Lanham , poet ornithologist, wonder-seeker, and joy-bringer.

A MacArthur Fellow, Drew clearly *knows* a lot. But perhaps more importantly, he also *feels* the natural world around him, that awakened sense of intrinsic, elemental belonging that Carson so deeply believed in 💚🕊🌊

How has Rachel Carson’s words affected you? Share your Spring:Story at the link in our bio.

Even before opening our doors, Springsong is making an impact-- bringing our mission to life by sharing Rachel Carson’s story and courageous ideas while connecting people to the natural world.

This year, our staff and volunteers reached over 1,500 community members through free educational programs, both in person and online, including:

- Free community programs and seasonal hikes
- Educational outreach to schools, retirement communities, and local organizations
- Panels, presentations, and public programs highlighting Rachel Carson’s legacy
- Nature-based art activities, meet-and-greets, and site engagement at our future museum home

This please visit the DONATE button through the link in our bio and support Springsong Museum with a donation that will expand these programs and help us soar into 2026.

We are grateful for every gift, no matter the size 🙏
