What is now the fully developed Las Vegas strip, 1952 Life Photographer, Loomis Dean

Before old school Las Vegas rose, many complicated real estate deals had to take place. The picture above shows a plot of barren land that sellers were hoping buyers would pay $3 million to use as a hotel site. As hard as it is to image what the area looked like before it was covered in incredible buildings and bright lights, this image definitely helps capture the calm before the storm.

Back when there was no air conditioner: children licking blocks of ice during heat wave, Lower East Side, Manhattan, New York City, July 1911.

If you didn't know, there was a heat wave so deadly it drove people insane. In fact, the 1911 Eastern North America heat wave was an 11-day severe heat wave that killed at least 380 people though estimates have put the death toll as high as 2,000 people in U.S.A. The heat wave began on July 4, 1911 and didn't end until July 15. The temperature peaked at 106 °F (41 °C). In New York City alone, 158 people and 600 horses died. It was a completely disaster.

Parks and beaches were opened for sleeping, and merchants offered free ice for people on the streets. In tenement slums, the sidewalks were lined with blankets and mattresses. Sleeping outside had its dangers, as thieves commonly stole hats, coats and wallets.

And as if this was not enough, Coney Island had a record movement too. Nearly half a million visitors found their way there during the day. Such an enormous crowd the island - and it is an island used to enormous crowds - has never before seen. Every elevated train, every surface car, every steamer, brought them in by the hundreds and thousands. Hundreds of automobiles chugged in seemingly never-ending succession along the parkways, all bound for the same place. Motorways, catboats, every kind of boat beat its way along the waters laboriously or gayly, as its build and power enabled, for the same destination.
