Did you know?
Substance use and interpersonal violence are closely connected—but substance use does not cause or excuse abuse.
📊 Research has found that substance use disorders are more common among both people who experience intimate partner violence and those who perpetrate it. In one national study, alcohol use disorder was reported among 24.6% of IPV victims and 21.7% of IPV perpetrators, compared with about 10% of people without those IPV experiences.
Trauma and violence can also increase the risk of harmful substance use. CDC reports that survivors of intimate partner and sexual violence are more likely to engage in behaviors such as binge drinking and drug use.
Recovery and safety can go hand in hand. Understanding both sides of the connection helps us better support survivors, individuals working toward recovery, and families affected by both violence and substance use.
