SWH will be represented at the National Genealogical Society's Family History Conference happening this week in Fort Wayne, Ind.! If you're going, look for Kaye at the ICAPGen booth or the APG booth and come say howdy! 🤠 This also means it may take me a little while to get back with you if you reach out to us. 😁 I believe there's still time to register for the virtual option...SO.MANY.TOPICS!!!

This is how I celebrate and perpetuate historic preservation…through family history and genealogy. Family history is integral to our country’s, our state’s, and our county’s founding history. If it were not for genealogy, there would be no history!

❤ if you agree!

The month of May also includes the Indiana DAR State Conference! This year was the 1️⃣2️⃣5️⃣th state conference!! Six chapter members attended: Ruth Rinehart, regent; Kaye Ford, vice regent; Sandy Sipes, treasurer; Stevie Meyer, our Junior; Maryetta Ford; and Carol Martin (in picture). The theme this year was celebrating patriotism. The SWH Chapter decorated a table featuring the 1920-1929 decade by highlighting our chapter's founding in 1927. Many memories made! Looking forward to next year's event! ❤🤍💙

🎖Every May, our chapter is busy presenting the DAR Youth Leadership Award to deserving elementary/middle school students. 🎖 2026 was no different! In total, we awarded nine awards...what an honor! Watch for the article in The Courier-Times. We are so proud of not only the winners of this award but all the students we encountered at their honors ceremony! We wish all them the very best in the future! Thank you to the principals and teachers of the schools, as well as to our chapter members for presenting these awards. 👏 Photo courtesy of DAR.org.

According to legend, 16-year-old Sybil Ludington rode 40 miles through the rainy night on April 26, 1777, to warn American militia that British troops were burning Danbury, Connecticut. She supposedly rode more than twice the distance of Paul Revere, rallying her father's troops, though modern scholars note a lack of contemporary evidence.

Key Aspects of the Legend:

❤ The Mission: After a messenger informed Col. Henry Ludington that the British were attacking Danbury, CT, his daughter, Sybil, volunteered to ride and alert the militia.
🤍 The Ride: She rode approximately 40 miles through the night, traveling through Carmel, Mahopac, Kent Cliffs, and Farmers Mills, in a heavy downpour.
💙 The Goal: She aimed to gather her father's scattered men so they could confront the British troops.
🇺🇸 Outcome: Although the militia was too late to save Danbury, they managed to surprise the retreating British soldiers.

Thank you Sybil for your service!
