Since 1978, the company has been a creative home for some of the world’s most celebrated artists including George C. Wolfe, August Wilson, Ntozake Shangé, Viola Davis, Courtney B. Vance, Ruby Dee & Ossie Davis. Decades later, Crossroads remains the first and only black theatre organization to receive the TONY AWARD® for OUTSTANDING REGIONAL THEATRE. The company continues to uphold repository of black classic plays and the commitment to new playwrights.

From Harlem’s National Black Theatre to Penumbra Theatre Company in St. Paul, Black creatives built spaces where our stories could be told freely, new voices could flourish, and artists like August Wilson, Ntozake Shange, and Chadwick Boseman could leave their mark.
