82 years ago today. Never forget.

Today is D-Day Remembrance Day... on June 6, 1944, Allied forces launched Operation Overlord — the massive amphibious invasion of N**i-occupied France along the beaches of Normandy. It became one of the largest and most consequential military operations of World War II, involving thousands of ships, aircraft, and ground troops across multiple nations.

The operation marked a turning point in the war in Europe, eventually leading to the liberation of Western Europe from N**i control. The fighting on the beaches — Omaha, Utah, Gold, Juno, and Sword — came at a heavy cost, with thousands of soldiers killed or wounded on the first day alone.

Today, D-Day is remembered not just as a military milestone, but as a moment defined by sacrifice, coordination, and courage from ordinary people placed in extraordinary circumstances.

It remains one of the most studied and honored events of the 20th century.

A day to remember those who never made it home.

The core mission of Wreaths Across America of New Britain, part of the national Wreaths Across America program, is to Remember, Honor and Teach. Teaching the younger generation of the value and importance of service to our nation - and of honoring the memories of those who served and are no longer with us - is paramount to our initiative. Our local program is fortunate to enjoy a strong, supportive relationship with the Consolidated School District of New Britain, and the school system's educators, administrators and students. We could not have successfully managed our wonderful 2026 Pasta Dinner Fundraiser on May 6 without the generous, hard-working support of more than 30 New Britain students from the NBHS Hurricane Battalion - JROTC and the New Britain Senior High School Culinary Program, who both presented the colors for our ceremonies and graciously served pasta meals with poise and professionalism to more than 400 hungry members of the community. They did a magnificent job, and earlier this week DAV Chapter 8 and Wreaths Across America of New Britain Planning Committee members had a chance to gather many of these students together for an afternoon pizza party to thank them for their volunteerism and support. It is uplifting and inspiring to know that so many of our youth have a genuine understanding of and appreciation for service and sacrifice. Please be sure to Save the Date for our 2026 Wreaths Across America of New Britain Day on December 19 at Fairview Cemetery.

What a fantastic evening it was on Wednesday as we held our 2026 Pasta Dinner Fundraiser in support of the Wreaths Across America of New Britain Day (WAANB) event coming in December. More than 400 enthusiastic patriots joined in to help us raise thousands of dollars to support this important annual community tradition. The evening was made all the more special as the WAANB Planning Committee surprised our retiring Chapter 8 Commander, Dennis Taricani, with a moving tribute in honor of his decades of service to the Veterans community. Special guests Mayor Bobby Sanchez, Connecticut Veterans Affairs Commissioner Ron Welch and House of Heroes Connecticut Executive Director Carol May all joined us to honor Dennis. The tribute was topped off by the presentation to Dennis of a commissioned painting by New Britain artist James D'Amore. There is not enough room in this space to thank all of our sponsors, but we'd like to extend special gratitude to our Patriot Sponsors The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, Anthony Micacci & Family, Perkins Travel, Unity Lodge No.148, Connecticut Freemasons and the VFW Post 511. And the rock stars of the night may have been our Consolidated School District of New Britain high school student volunteers (servers and color guard) including members of the New Britain Senior HS Culinary Program and NBHS Hurricane Battalion - JROTC. Thanks to everyone who pitched in to help make this annual event another smash success - the thousands of dollars you help raise will keep this important program honoring those who served and those we've lost going for years to come. If you or your company are interested in sponsoring this program, please visit www.davchapter8.org and look for Wreaths Across America under Events. There is also a complete event photo gallery on our site. (Thank you to Paul Salina. Lucia Micacci and Charlene Buden for the terrific photos.)
