Project Great Lakes

Project Great Lakes was out on Lake Michigan with Great Lakes Shipwreck Preservation Society - GLSPS as we attempted to survey the Salvor, located 2.7 miles from the Muskegon Channel. Unfortunately, the current was too strong to complete the survey, but we had a beautiful view and were joined on the water by a flotilla of sailboats. The work GLSPS is doing is incredibly important to Great Lakes shipwreck preservation. Through photogrammetry, the condition of these vessels can be monitored over time, helping us better understand how changing underwater conditions and organisms affect their deterioration. I am grateful that Project GL had the opportunity to be part of this important work.

Project Great Lakes is a regional outreach initiative dedicated to connecting people with the rich maritime history of the Great Lakes.

What began as an educational program for K–12 students has evolved into a community initiative for anyone who wants to Discover. Learn. Protect.

Using 3D technology, photographs, and place-based learning, Project GL creates immersive experiences that invite people of all ages to dive into the stories, history, and heritage of the Great Lakes.

As Project GL continues to traverse the Lakes, its mission is simple: honor the past, celebrate those who serve, and inspire future generations to protect the Great Lakes.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Interlake Steamship Company for the opportunity to conduct research aboard the M/V Kaye E. Barker last fall. The experience provided valuable insight and offered perspective that simply cannot be gained from books or archives. Time spent aboard a working Great Lakes vessel offered a firsthand look at the industry and the crews whose work keeps commerce moving across the region. That perspective continues to influence my work with Project Great Lakes and my efforts to connect communities with the maritime history of the Lakes.

A special thank you to Chrissy, the captain, and the crew for their hospitality and willingness to share their stories throughout the voyage. Your generosity made the experience unforgettable.
