As Celiac Awareness Month comes to a close, we want to leave you with one important reminder: celiac awareness doesn't end when May ends.

For people living with celiac disease, the need for awareness, education, research, safe food access, and support exists every day of the year. Every meal, every social gathering, every doctor's appointment, every school accommodation, and every trip to the grocery store is another opportunity to navigate a disease that is still widely misunderstood.

Throughout May, we've shared stories, resources, research, and experiences from our community. We hope those conversations continue long after the calendar turns to June.

Whether you're newly diagnosed, supporting a loved one, advocating for accommodations, raising awareness in your community, or simply learning more about celiac disease, thank you for being part of this movement.

Until there's a cure, we'll keep educating, advocating, and supporting the celiac community every month of the year.

Thank you for spending Celiac Awareness Month with us. đź’š Special thanks to our giveaway sponsors this year who hooked some lucky winners up with delicious GF foods this month! San-J Canyon Gluten Free Bakehouse Against The Grain Gourmet Eat Milton's

It’s the last day of and also and our Teen Advisory Committee wanted to take the time to share some of the more frustrating aspects that they experience dealing with celiac disease. Sophie has left invalidated when people think avoiding gluten is easy, especially if they’ve tried it briefly not knowing how sick a tiny bit of gluten can make someone with celiac disease. It’s important we talk about these things so we can build connections and not feel ashamed on the days we find difficult.

May is a special time for our community as we shine a spotlight on celiac disease awareness. May is also Mental Health Awareness Month! The connection between celiac disease and our mental health is huge and incredibly important.

Our Teen Advisory Committee, part of our Raising our Celiac Kids (ROCK) program, is rolling out a multi-media campaign this month called Teens Talk Celiac, which focuses on mental health and celiac disease.

It’s the last week of and also and our Teen Advisory Committee wanted to take the time to share some of the more frustrating aspects that they experience dealing with celiac disease. Eli has struggled with feeling isolated when there aren’t food options, and yet sometimes burdensome when there are. It’s important we talk about these things so we can build connections and not feel ashamed on the days we find difficult.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition. When someone with CeD eats gluten, their immune system produces antibodies that attack the small intestine. Over time, this damages the villi, the tiny finger-like structures in our intestine responsible for absorbing nutrients.

That damage is why celiac disease can cause such a wide range of symptoms throughout the body! The immune response impacts the entire body, not just the gut.

Some people have few or no GI symptoms at all (even when instestinal damage is happening), and these individuals often face a delay in diagnosis. Currently, the only treatment for CeD is the lifelong adherence to a strict gluten-free (GF) diet.

There are a lot of snarky things we’d like to say in response to the ignorant comments about celiac disease and gluten on the podcast but we are going to keep it professional and let Sophie from our Teen Advisory Committee educate about celiac disease.

People with celiac disease deal with so many complex feelings of social isolation and we hate to see such a large platform pushing narratives that make it even harder for us. We can guarantee that you do not, in fact, want to see the reaction we have from eating gluten!

We would also like to note that the average age of diagnosis is between 46 and 56 years old, with about a quarter of cases being diagnosed in people over the age of 60. So your parents’ generation definitely does have it, in fact they are very underdiagnosed and people are still suffering with no answers. We hope to change that by bringing more awareness!

Do you relate to Hunter’s story? Living with celiac disease can come with its ups and downs, but for a lot of us things can “click” as we find systems that work for us.
