What you see is all the poison hemlock that was removed from the Navarre-Bethlehem Park! There were some other invasives that were removed in the process. Thank you Benjamin Bravis and Kane Stotzer for the invasive species removal!

If you see these invasive species around, please relocate them directly to the garbage. If you can, get your invasive species pulled this week, because they are about ready to start dropping their seeds.
Do Not Burn Poison Hemlock

This weekend, invasive species were removed from both sides of 1,675 feet of Fohl Creek in Navarre-Bethlehem Park. Target species included Poison Hemlock, Garlic Mustard, Purple Crown Vetch, Dame's Rocket, and Tree-of-Heaven. To give you an idea of the amount that was removed, the removed vegetation filled one and a half dumpsters.
This removal, completed before the seeds drop, will reduce the workload next year, when this process will need to be repeated.
Some Garlic Mustard and Crown Vetch may remain, but all mature Poison Hemlock has been removed to prevent seed dispersal.

We can’t wait to see what sprouts at NBTP! On Saturday March 29th, the Pollinator Meadow and Navarre Wetland received a combined 71 species of Ohio native seeds, which will add to the ~60 plant species growing across the park, more than doubling the plant diversity of NBTP as a whole! The lists shown below are only some of the species planted.

Aside from adding natural beauty, these native plants will create opportunity for increased insect, bird, amphibian and reptile diversity. This will lead to a much stronger ecology at NBTP, and many more educational opportunities.

We would also like to thank our volunteers who helped us make fish traps at the March public meeting, to be used in upcoming research. If you’d like to join in the fun, join us at NBTP on the fourth wednesday of next month at 6pm!
(In the case of poor weather, a different meeting location will be announced)
