𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲. ❤️

𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 gives us an opportunity to celebrate our cultures—but also to listen more closely to the many stories, experiences, and traditions that make up our communities.

On September 30, 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 brings one of those stories to Lipscomb University through 𝐑𝐚𝐟𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐕𝐚𝐬𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐳, a Mexican-American and Tejano musician whose journey connects the musical traditions of San Antonio, Texas, with decades of life and music-making in Nashville and Tennessee.

Rafael’s story carries generations of musical tradition. His journey includes performing with influential Tejano artists 𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐞 𝐲 𝐋𝐚 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭í𝐧 𝐑𝐚𝐦í𝐫𝐞𝐳, and later establishing the 𝐒𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐚𝐟𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐝 after making Nashville his home.

Over the years, Rafael has helped make Latin music part of Nashville’s broader musical story. And that story is still being written. This summer, the San Rafael Band performed as part of Let Freedom Sing! Music City July 4th, bringing Latin music to one of Nashville’s largest public celebrations.

On September 30, the 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦.

Rafael will sit with students studying Spanish at different levels to share music, memories, and experiences—and to open a conversation about 𝐌𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧-𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐞𝐣𝐚𝐧𝐨 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐬, 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞, 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠.

These are the moments we hope to nurture through 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬, a program of the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation (𝐍𝐀𝐇𝐂𝐂 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧): artists and culture bearers sharing what they carry; students asking questions and discovering new perspectives; educators opening their classrooms; and schools, universities, and community organizations helping create spaces where those exchanges can happen.

Because a community’s story belongs to all of us—and it becomes richer every time we make room for another voice, another tradition, another experience, and another connection. ❤️

During 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡, we celebrate not one story, but the many histories, cultures and traditions that shape Hispanic and Latino communities.

That idea came to life at St. Bernard Academy, where students met 𝐒𝐢𝐩𝐡𝐨 𝐃𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐞 for Afro-Latino Roots: Music, Culture & Identity, part of the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 program.

When a student asked Sipho what kind of music he likes, he started with salsa — “𝐈 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐚. 𝐒𝐨𝐲 𝐮𝐧 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐨.”— then jazz, R&B, rock, country and soul. But his answer became something much bigger:

“𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜. 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜. 𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞… 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫. 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐬 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲’𝐬 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞.”

Through instruments, rhythm and conversation, students explored connections among 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧, 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐨-𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐧, 𝐏𝐮𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬—and discovered how music can carry culture, history and heritage across generations.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, the 𝗡𝗮𝘀𝗵𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗮 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗡𝗔𝗛𝗖𝗖 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻) is bringing its 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 program into classrooms and community learning spaces across Nashville—creating opportunities for young people to encounter diverse histories, cultural traditions, identities, and lived experiences.

We began with 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗔𝗿𝘁: 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰 & 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗔𝗿𝘁, 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, a hands-on arts education experience featuring 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗼 𝗩𝗮𝘇𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘇, 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 & 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮, 𝗔𝘇𝘁𝗲𝗰 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 & 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗿.

Through visual art, movement, storytelling, dialogue, and living cultural traditions, students are exploring heritage and identity while connecting what they learn with their own stories and creative expression. 𝗔𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸.

For generations, Black communities kept the spirit and history of Juneteenth alive. Dr. Opal Lee made it her mission to carry it onto the national stage.

At 89 years old, she began walking 2.5 miles to symbolize the two-and-a-half years it took for freedom to reach enslaved people in Texas. She marched, organized, educated, and advocated tirelessly for Juneteenth to receive national recognition.

As we celebrate today, we give thanks to the elders who have carried our freedom and this fight forward.

While walking or hiking, beware of these tiny little creatures!

Ticks are everywhere this time of year in Tennessee. These tiny pests can carry illnesses like Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and ehrlichiosis. Taking a few extra precautions when outdoors can help limit your exposure:

➜ Stick to the center of trails and avoid tall grass and brush when possible.

➜ Wear light-colored clothing so ticks are easier to spot, and consider tucking pants into socks for extra protection.

➜ Using an insect repellent with DEET or treating clothes with permethrin can make a big difference.

➜ After spending time outside, always do a full body check and consider showering within a couple of hours to wash off ticks before they bite.
