We're continuing to highlight the composers who created the stunning music we're privileged to sing on the Songs for a New South album. The Carter Family Canticles by Dr. Jeremy Smith is a three movement suite for choir based on traditional lyrics and melodies, as well as works by A.P., Sara and Maybelle Carter.
Dr. Smith is a composer, theorist, educator and entrepreneur based in Florence, Alabama. His music has been performed by ensembles like the Symphony Orchestra of Northern Virginia, the Huntsville Youth Orchestra and the University of Alabama Concert Band, and at a variety of conferences and festivals. He is a sought-after artistic collaborator, a frequent participant in artist residencies and composition workshops, and currently serves as executive director of the Shoals Symphony at the University of North Alabama, where he also teaches.
