Looking for community service work, a fun family project or a way to become more deeply involved in keeping Belmont-Hillsboro a great place to live?
Neighborhoods this great don’t stay that way by accident! Back in 1971, a handful of neighbors looked around at a neighborhood in decline and decided to do something about it. They formed Belmont-Hillsboro Neighbors and by 1975 were putting together BUILDING A NEIGHBORHOOD: YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW, a roadmap for protecting our streets and homes at a time when metro didn’t have a fully-functioning planning department to help.
That same scrappy energy got us listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, and eventually gave us the Belmont-Hillsboro Conservation Overlay in 2005, protecting, at the time, over 800 homes from development incongruous with the history and character of the neighborhood.
As the oldest, continuously operating neighborhood organization in Nashville, we’re still doing the work: planting and maintaining our tree canopy, keeping an eye on zoning and codes, working actively to address issues like safety and parking, planning community-building events and supporting local neighborhood groups like the Second Sunday Gardeners.
None of that happens without the help of talented, engaged neighbor volunteers. Everything on the above list started with a neighbor who raised a hand.
So, here’s the ask: we’re looking for neighbors to help shape the future of Belmont-Hillsboro. Whether you’ve got two hours a month or two hours a year; whether you’re into trees, historic preservation, event planning, social media, safety or just want to show up to meet people, there’s a role for you.
