Total Joint Replacement surgery is one of the most successful and frequently performed operations worldwide. Patients often report dramatic pain relief and improved function, which allows them to regain their independence and overall quality of life.

However, the cost of joint replacement implants places them out of reach for many patients, particularly those in low and middle-income countries.
​
As a nonprofit medical humanitarian organization, the WalkStrong Foundation is committed to creating sustainable total joint replacement programs in underserved communities. The organization provides knee and hip replacements at no cost to individuals suffering from arthritis in developing countries.

We’re proud to celebrate two of our own, Dr. Michael Christie and Dr. Jose Alcerro, for their recent publication in The Journal of Arthroplasty!

Their work highlights something we believe deeply at Walk Strong: the future of global surgery isn’t short-term missions, it is empowering local surgeons and building sustainable systems of care.

In their study, a locally led joint replacement program in Honduras achieved:
✔️ Life-changing improvements in patient mobility and function
✔️ Low complication rates comparable to U.S. benchmarks
✔️ Over 90% patient follow up far exceeding typical mission models

The takeaway is clear: when we invest in training, partnership, and local leadership, the impact goes far beyond a single surgery, it strengthens entire healthcare systems for the long term.

⭐️Dr. Spotlight⭐️

Once a month, Walk Strong’s Dr. Morrison generously gives his time to serve patients at Siloam Health, including individuals like Freddy, whose stories remind us why this mission matters so much.

We’re incredibly grateful for Dr. Morrison’s heart to serve and for the partnership with Siloam Health that makes moments like this possible.

Fredy arrived at Siloam Health for his first appointment unable to walk. The pain from his rheumatoid arthritis had become so severe that even the smallest movement was unbearable.

Dr. Jule West connected Fredy with a foundation to provide the hip surgeries he needed at no cost — but the year-long wait required careful support along the way. Thanks to friends like you, Siloam walked alongside Fredy every step, managing his pain and advocating for his care until he could finally have two hip replacements, one month apart.

Today, Fredy is walking again! His health allows him to support his family, and he has reclaimed the joyful, everyday moments that once felt out of reach.

Last Fall we introduced the newest members of the WalkStrong team. The Russell family, who are currently serving in Blantyre, Malawi, where Dr. Russell works at Beit Cure Hospital with Cure International as a pediatric orthopaedic oncology surgeon specializing in limb salvage surgery and treating children with complex hip conditions.

This week marks an exciting milestone! Dr. Russell, alongside Dr. Stocks, has officially launched their first pediatric surgery campaign for total hip replacement using World Hip.

We’re proud to spotlight two of these patients: a 16-year old male with post-traumatic osteonecrosis and a 17-year old female with idiopathic osteonecrosis. Their journeys represent the impact and importance of the WalkStrong mission.

We are incredibly excited about what lies ahead and our growing relationship with Cure International.
