Meet our conference speakers, Heather Phillips and Adela Zayas!

💜 For the past 14 years, Heather Phillips has explored substance use, mental health, and intimate partner violence through serving as Research Director at The National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma, and Mental Health Her research focuses on the prevalence and impact of mental health and substance use coercion, survivor-defined research practices, and the expansion of accessible, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed services. During this keynote entitled "Another Form of Listening," attendees will learn about methods and tools to evaluate trauma-informed SV and DV services. Heather will also discuss how to apply those tools to engage survivors, staff, community members, and other important people in the process of evaluation.

💛 Adela Zayas is a Salvadoran clinical psychologist with dual master's degrees in clinical and health psychology and cognitive behavioral therapy. She also holds training in EMDR therapy and brings a strong integrative approach to her clinical work, grounded in psychodynamic principles. Adela's workshop, "Accompanying Pain," offers a practical, accessible framework, similar to Psychological First Aids, to support professionals in their initial response to survivors of SV. Through a structured toolbox, participants will learn how to provide accompaniment, safety, emotional support, and guidance while minimizing the risk of re-traumatization and honoring each survivor’s unique process.

Meet our conference speakers Amanda Lyon, Cory Williams, and Mary-Ann Burkhart!

💛 Amanda Lyon (LCSW) is the Training and Technical Assistance Manager at the National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma, and Mental Health. In Amanda's conference workshop, "Strengthening Survivor Support Through Trauma-Informed Practice," participants will explore how trauma affects communication, decision-making, and engagement, and learn how to recognize and respond to trauma-related behaviors with empathy. Using an Accessible, Culturally Responsive, and Trauma-Informed (ACRTI) approach, participants will practice applying strategies that increase emotional safety, strengthen relationships, and support survivors’ self-defined goals.

🧠 Cory Williams (MS, BCN, qEEG-D) is the Director of Neurodiagnostics & Neurofeedback at Nashville Child & Family Wellness Center. His conference workshop "Balancing the Autonomic Nervous System with Vagal Nerve Stimulation" will examine the role of the autonomic nervous system in symptoms related to PTSD. Cory will discuss how these symptoms manifest, how to measure the underlying physiological factors, and how to address them to foster feelings of relaxation and safety in populations affected by PTSD.

⚖️ Mary-Ann Burkhart is an Assistant State’s Attorney from Maryland with more than 30 years of prosecution experience. Her workshop, "You Are Safe Here: Reducing the Trauma and Stress to Make the Courtroom a Safe Space for Survivors," will focus on the courtroom experience, how the studies show that testifying in court is traumatic and stressful, and how to reduce that trauma and stress through pretrial motions, courtroom configurations and jury education.

You can earn 6 NBCC CEs by attending the FREE virtual SAC Statewide Training Conference, "Intersections of Care and Justice," May 27-29.
