Join us this Saturday 3/14/26 at 10:30am at the Frist Center as we continue our exploration of various pens and nibs. Scroll through the pictures for previews of split pens, scroll pens, parallel pens, folded pens, ruling pens, and quills.

Sheryl Bracey, Valerie Cypress, Ann Cobb, and Beth Paul will be doing demonstrations of the tools so you can see ways they can be used. This will be an excellent opportunity for everyone to learn about techniques they may not have tried before or wish to try again. Using these specialty pens can add “pop” to your design and give you plenty of possibilities for your year-long project!

Pens, paper, and ink will be provided for you to play with tools and explore which ones pique your playful curiosity. These items are sold at Paper and Ink Arts, who will be open for our scribes to shop after the meeting!

Have you begun work on your Lettering Project for 2026?

For those new to the guild, our annual lettering projects are a focused way to help you push your skills throughout the year- typically with one task a month. Ann Cobb has inspired us each to grow in 2026 with the following challenge:

"You are to select one or two quotes, poems, Scripture passages, or any other block of text that you like. You will use it or those all year long. Alternately, you could choose 12 different texts and focus on one each month.

Each month you will select a lettering style, a color or colors, and a layout to use in lettering your text. Your text should be a finished piece that you could frame for an exhibit. At the end of the year, each of us should have 12 finished pieces.

I hope each of you will decide to participate whether you are a seasoned calligrapher or a beginner. You will amaze yourself at what you will accomplish."

Do you have a favorite quote that you're *NOT* using for the project this year? Drop it in the comments below for another guild member to use!

Do you look at your calligraphy pieces and wonder why they all look the same? Do you wonder what you could do differently to improve your work? Do you struggle with envelopes or quotations or wedding work or certificates?

Join us for the January program to hear tips, hints, and tricks for improving your layout. Some of the veterans in our group will share with you how they handle various parts of their work. See samples of certificates, envelopes, wedding suites, and other calligraphic pieces.

Bring your camera to take photos if you wish, and bring paper and pen to take some notes. We hope to see each of you there!

THIS MONTH’S PROGRAM: Back to the Basics (Second in a Series)
"Pointed Pen"

This month is the second in a series on the basic tools of calligraphy. This month, we will concentrate on the Pointed Pen nib. We will have nibs that most calligraphers use and recommend for you to try to see which ones suit you best. For those of you who are new to pointed pen, be sure to ask questions. There are several people who are very proficient and will be happy to help. If you have avoided using pointed pen until now, here is your chance to see if you might want to learn more about it.

We will have tables set up with different brands at each table and paper and ink for you to use. If you still have the walnut ink from the last program, feel free to bring it to use.

Note: Paper and Ink Arts will be open on the Saturday of our meeting so that, after the program, anyone who wishes to purchase some nibs or other supplies, will be able to visit and shop.

Join us for our September meeting this Saturday, 9/13/25 @ 10:30am.
Donelson Library

Nashville, TN 37214

This month begins a series on the basic tools of calligraphy.

We will start with the nib that seems to be the most common nib people try first - the Broad Pen.

For those who are new to calligraphy, this will be the perfect opportunity to join us to learn about the broad pen nibs and the difference between the most common brands used for calligraphy. For those who use the broad pen, this will be the chance to sample different nibs to see which one suits you best. We will have tables set up with a different brand at each table with paper and ink so that you can try them and make notes.

Note: Paper and Ink Arts will be open on the Saturday of our meeting so that, after the program, anyone who wishes to purchase some nibs or other supplies, will be welcome to visit and buy what they need.

If you participated in the Summer Envelope Exchange, be sure to bring the envelopes you received to share with everyone!

Register now for our October workshop with Tamara Stoneburner, **IN PERSON**, October 4 and 5 at Paper & Ink Arts!

Tamara studied with Sheila Waters for many years, and will be sharing Gothicized Italic with us. Registrations are a bit low at this point, and we surely do not want to cancel this workshop; so send in your check and form to ensure your spot in the workshop.

Because she will be traveling to Nashville, we need all registrations submitted no later than September 1, so register now! Form is available in Ann's most recent email.
