Conserve Nashville's Highland Rim Forest

Conserve Nashville's Highland Rim Forest Our vision is to see those long range plans funded and implemented. It's already in the plans. Now let's make it so.

The Alliance to Conserve Nashville's Highland Rim Forest is a growing informal coalition of Nashville non-profit organizations and concerned citizens aligned with a common vision: Conserve Nashville's Highland Rim Forest.

17 of Nashville's long range plans call for "Championing The Environment" and preserving our part of the Highland Rim Forest, the emerald hills to the west of Nashville with nes

tled gems like Radnor, Warner, Bells Bend, and Beaman Parks. Alliance partners include: The Cumberland River Compact, Southern Conservation Partners, Tennessee Environmental Council, TennGreen Land Conservancy, Nashville Tree Conservation Corps, Friends of Beaman Park, Radnor to River, Friends of Whites Creek, and Tennesse Interfaith Light and Power, and hundreds of concerned Nashville citizens. Join the Alliance and help Conserve Nashville's Highland Rim Forest. Learn more at www.nasvhillehighlandrimforest.org.

A truth that bears repeating.

When street trees are removed, communities can expect more stormwater runoff flowing into drainage systems. In this study, 31 street trees were removed from a residential area, resulting in an increase of about 4% stormwater runoff. Researchers observed this impact over the course of 42 storms and found that the trees had acted like natural sponges, catching and storing water in their leaves and branches.

The takeaway is simple: street trees aren’t just for shade or beauty—they help protect our neighborhoods by reducing stormwater runoff while supporting cleaner, healthier communities.

What does this mean for Tennessee’s cities and towns facing growing challenges from heavy rains and flash flooding? Urban forests—whether along streets, in neighborhoods, or older tree‑lined blocks—can provide the same stormwater benefits shown in the study. Protecting and expanding street trees in Tennessee not only adds beauty and shade, but also strengthens local infrastructure by reducing runoff, improving water quality, and making communities more resilient to storms.
