⚖️ Ethics Chair: Cindy Minnis ⚖️

Cindy currently works with MNPS and Lipscomb University. She is originally from Missouri but has been in TN for 40 years. She has had lots of interesting opportunities in her career such as working on Governor Haslam's school safety working group and helping develops Lipscomb's school psychology program. Cindy passed her love for school psychology onto her daughter who is currently in school to be a school psychologist. She likes spending time in nature especially if its the ocean or the mountains. She also love trees and currently has a house in the woods.

The Ethics and Professional Standards Committee will be convening quarterly via Zoom, with an upcoming meeting on Monday, November 15th at 4:00 pm central time. In alignment with this year's TASP conference theme, the focus will be on "finding our rhythm" by establishing short and long term goals for the committee to best support school psychology practitioners and graduate students across Tennessee. The 2027 Project RAISE Mental Health Conference is now accepting presentation proposals!

Join us May 6–7, 2027, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, as school psychologists, school counselors, school social workers, district administrators, and other school-based mental health professionals come together for practical, evidence-informed professional development.

We are seeking presentations addressing topics such as:

✨️ Meet Your TASP Committee Chairs ✨️

Hi all 👋

My name is Erin Dees and I am currently the social media chair for TASP. I took over this position after the 2025 spring institute. I also help out with the conventions and GPR committees. If you want to help out with any of those committees, including social media, let us know because we are always happy to have more volunteers 😊

I am a school psychologist with Metro Nashville Public Schools. This is my 9th year with the district as a licensed psych and I also did my internship with MNPS before being hired. I currently work in an elementary school with a high English language learning population and an academic magnet high school so my work week has lots of variety! I earned my undergraduate degree in psychology and graduate degrees in school psychology at MTSU.

When I am not working or helping with TASP, I love spending time with my husband Brandon and our two dogs Olive and Dennifer Tomothy Dees 🐶🐕. I am big fan of board games 🎲 and have never seen a sparkly rainbow item I didn't love 💖🌈 🪩 I also enjoy going to pilates and reading 💪📚

Dr. McClure will be presenting the following session:

Moving Away From Deficit Thinking: Practices That Change Outcomes

Duration: 2 hours

This session explores how focusing primarily on what students cannot do can shape referrals, assessments, reports, expectations, and supports. Drawing from Hacking Deficit Thinking, Dr. Byron McClure will share practical strategies for shifting toward strength-based practice by asking “What’s strong?” before “What’s wrong?”, gathering asset-focused data, reframing report language, and leading more productive conversations with teams and families. Participants will leave with practical tools and language they can immediately apply to referrals, evaluations, and team meetings.

✨️ Session information for the 2026 TASP Fall Conference ✨️

We are very fortunate that Dr. Ryan Farmer, PhD, has agreed to present to us twice!

His second session will be:

AI Ethics in Tennessee: What State Law Requires and What Professional Ethics Asks of School Psychologists

This session explores how school psychologists can use artificial intelligence responsibly and legally in Tennessee schools. It reviews emerging Tennessee laws, federal requirements such as FERPA and IDEA, and NASP ethical standards to help practitioners navigate common AI applications such as report writing, record summarization, score interpretation, and eligibility decision support. Participants will learn how to protect student privacy, evaluate AI tools for accuracy and bias, understand their professional responsibility when using AI-assisted recommendations, and implement practical safeguards such as parent notification, consent procedures, and verification of AI-generated content. The session emphasizes balancing innovation with ethical and legal obligations in school psychology practice.
