At our 2023 You Got Gold event, Robby pressed a gold coin into my hand. “Use this to do some good,” he said.

He and his sister, Mary Ellen, had been going to John Prine shows together for decades. That coin helped families recovering from an apartment fire. This year, he came back and quietly gave us another one, with the same heartfelt message to do good work in John’s memory.

This is what humbles us at Hello In There Foundation: the trust John’s fans place in us to honor his legacy of kindness.

Thanks to this community, we’ve granted almost $1.4 million to organizations addressing hunger, housing, mental health, disaster relief, and addiction recovery, among other issue areas.

Not everyone has a gold coin to share—and that’s okay. What matters is finding your own way to keep John’s spirit alive. So many beautiful people honor John through donations, tribute concerts, community service, sharing his music, and in more ways we haven’t even dreamed of yet. We’re so grateful for this community of fans who have come together to celebrate and remember him.

However you participate, you’re part of something John would have loved—people looking out for each other.

John loved Christmas. He knew the holidays were about reaching out, showing up, and reminding each other we’re not alone. It’s the heart of the work we do at the Hello in There Foundation.

This season, we’re grateful to you for helping us keep John’s spirit of kindness and community alive. Wishing everyone a warm and wonderful holiday! 🎄

We are thrilled to welcome Megan Barry to the Hello in There Foundation’s Board of Directors!

A long time friend of the Prine Family, brings a deep love of people, a commitment to community-building, and a genuine appreciation for the power of music to bring people together, all values that John Prine embodied throughout his life and career.

As Nashville’s former Mayor and a dedicated public servant, Megan understands how the work of the foundation can help to strengthen communities and create pathways for connection.

We’re so grateful to have her vision, heart, and expertise as we continue building a foundation that reflects John’s generosity, humor, and belief in lifting others up.

Welcome, Megan! We’re excited to work alongside you. 💛

John Prine wrote the song “Hello In There” while walking his mail route in Maywood, IL. He was not yet 22 years old but he had the compassion and kindness even then to understand that sometimes just a simple “Hello,” or a random act of kindness can make a difference.

John’s family created the Hello In There Foundation to honor his legacy, generosity of spirit, and commitment to community.

Since 2021, the foundation has given away $1.4 million to 100+ organizations, continuing his lifelong commitment to supporting marginalized communities through grants addressing food security, housing, mental health, addiction recovery, and the arts.

This Giving Tuesday, join us in carrying forward John’s spirit of compassion. Link in bio to learn more and get involved.

With gratitude,
The Prine Family

Continuing our look back at You Got Gold 2025. We loved kicking off our week with Operation Encore at Anzie Blue!

Rachel Harvey Hill, Abe Partridge, and Derek Stoner Music from Operation Encore joined us to share incredible songs and stories to the stage. These talented artists are veterans and members of the military community, and having them with us to share their craft in such an intimate setting felt special.

Thanks also to our forever friends at Hattie B's Hot Chicken for bringing their brunch, and to our partners at Anzie Blue (Nashville’s only woman-owned music venue!) for being so warm and welcoming.

It’s a beautiful thing when organizations like Operation Encore support veterans pursuing their creative dreams. We’re proud to count them among our 2025 grantees!

We are heartbroken that Todd Snider has left us.

Todd once said about John: “Nobody’s ever deserved there to be a heaven more than John Prine.” After John’s passing, Todd joined us onstage at You Got Gold a number of times to share his time and talent in honoring him. His kindness and support of the Hello in There Foundation came from a place of deep love.

Todd, thank you for showing up for John, for the Prine family, and for this community when it mattered most. We’ll miss you. 💛
