Piper and I were reading “The One and Only Bob” together yesterday and I came across the sweetest description of “enrichment” and thought I would share it here. While the book is describing animals in a zoo/park setting, the same can be applied here I believe!

“They try to keep the [insert: participants] engaged with surprises and challenges and changes to their environment…. Not exactly like a day in [insert: school/work] of course, but the [insert: instructors/volunteers] try as hard as they can to make life interesting.”

🖤🧡 SHRED WITH A PURPOSE 🧡🖤

Thanks to Kim and Katie Luxury Realtors for sponsoring a DONATION BASED fitness class Shred415 Naperville on September 18th at 1pm to benefit the inclusive programming TeachMe,LB in Naperville!

The class, taught by Ashlee Renee is free to attend with a suggested donation of $30 — all donations will be collected at the event and proceeds will go straight to TMLB.

SPOTS ARE LIMITED and will be reserved on a first-come basis. To reserve your spot, please email [email protected] with the subject line “SHRED” — we will collect names until full, and begin a waitlist. If you need to cancel, you will also do that via email, and we ask that you do to make room for waitlist!

We can’t wait to SHRED WITH A PURPOSE with you!

Many of you know that we are a job training site for students in STEPS (transition program with District 204) — and we would love to get our TMLB community involved in this program!

BECOME A TASK SUPPORT VOLUNTEER
Tuesdays & Thursdays • 10 AM–12 PM

Two students and a job coach will join us each week from STEPS. Our Task Support Volunteers will welcome the students, introduce them to their task sheets and assignments (provided by TMLB), and be available for questions or support along the way. Volunteers can bring their own work or tasks to do at the desk or in library during this time!

The district job coach will work alongside the students as they complete their tasks. Our volunteers will simply be a familiar, encouraging point of contact to help them feel comfortable and successful at TeachMe,LB. Our founder, Liza, or other teaching staff is on site teaching classes during this time and available to help when needed!

No special experience required — just a welcoming attitude and a willingness to help! We will take consistent, weekly signups or as sporadic as needed!

If interested, please email [email protected] with the subject line “Task Support Volunteer” as soon as possible. We will be coordinating a few drop-in training sessions to prepare volunteers.

Our September programs are up and ready to be registered for- and we have four sponsored classes ((yes that means free/donation only to the community)) thanks to Gail Niermeyer CB Broker and Jesse Niermeyer McHugh at Coldwell Banker Realty!! Had a sweet afternoon with some student athletes from the community! Girls left confident in their skills in the kitchen with two fun and easy protein-heavy recipes. It was a joy to have them in our space learning, moving, and growing! Proof that enrichment is easy and fun for all ages and abilities :)

People keep asking me if Sunday’s Open House was a success— so here’s how I’d like to answer that:

First and foremost: the two-fold goal of the open house was to spotlight our new space and to make money for Jack’s Basket. We raised almost $2k for Jack’s Basket (that’s 13 baskets/babies celebrated) and had almost 200 people tour our center. Meeting those two goals is one way to measure our success- check, done!

But more than that: an understanding of what enrichment is, what inclusion and belonging are, and why both of those are important, were showcased throughout the afternoon. People of all ages and abilities gathered to learn and teach and be in community — and that is a success not measured by numbers.

And last but certainly not least— our donors. We have always believed that the size of the gift isn’t the point- that people donating to TeachMe is proof that they stand behind what we are building. That buy-in helps us reach others and become more accessible. From $5 raffle tickets to large public and private checks, we are BEYOND grateful.

This video was (spontaneously) taken during a moment of surprise— when the generosity of one influential donor encouraged others to make a difference, we became the recipients of yet another gift that will change our ability to make a lasting impact in our community. Thank you Dean Raschke and Perspectives Foundation for introducing us to Next Phase Advisory Group - and to Next Phase for your incredible gift. We can’t wait to share with you all what this means to us and our community!
