Abusers frequently use animals to manipulate, control, and intimidate victims, with studies showing that in up to 71% to 89% of domestic violence cases, partners threaten, harm, or kill family pets to exert control. Furthermore, pets are often introduced as "gifts" (94% of which are later abused) or used as pawns, with 25% of victims delaying leaving over fears for their pet’s safety
