September and Our Lady of Sorrows 🖤

The honoring of Mary reaches back to the earliest centuries of the Church. Christians did not remember her as competing with Jesus, but as the woman who said yes to Him, bore Him, followed Him, and remained near Him even at the Cross.

In the Catholic tradition, September is especially associated with Our Lady of Sorrows - a remembrance of the sufferings Mary endured throughout the life and Passion of Jesus. From the beginning, Simeon had foretold this path when he told her, “a sword will pierce your own soul also” (Luke 2:35).

Why does her example matter so much today? There are many reasons of course, but let’s zoom in on one: When Jesus was arrested, most of His disciples scattered. Yet at Calvary, Scripture shows Mary still there, standing near the Cross with the beloved disciple (John).

Whatever your church background, there is something incredibly valuable and necessary to our walk with Christ in her example. The blessed Virgin Mary is an icon of faithful love: the kind of love that stays when there is nothing left to fix, nothing left to explain, and nowhere else to go but beside the suffering Christ.

He who is not angry when there is just cause for anger is immoral. Why? Because anger looks to the good of justice. And if you can live amid injustice without anger, you are immoral as well as unjust. - Saintly wisdom based on St. Thomas Aquinas

Did you know that St. Augustine’s mother was also a saint? Meet St. Monica of Hippo! Her life reminds us that even when someone is wandering far from God, love never gives up on them! Believe it or not, she prayed for her son Augustine for years (like some of you may be) who was steeped in rebellion and confusion, and without knowing how his story would end. She just kept entrusting him to God!

She was a powerful witness that no person is beyond grace, no season of wandering is necessarily final, and no place is truly far from God. For every pilgrim carrying someone in prayer today: keep loving, keep hoping, keep entrusting them to Jesus! 🤍
