This one is for the woman no one would ever suspect.
The one with the nice house, the good job, the kids in all the right activities. The one who shows up to church, to work, to every event, smiling. The one who tells herself:
“He’s never hit me, so it’s not abuse.”
“My family is going to judge me.”
“It doesn’t happen that often.”
“I fight back too, so it’s not really abuse.”
“He’s stressed. He’ll change.”
“What would people think?”
“I’d lose everything.”
Abuse doesn’t have to happen every day to be abuse, either. And if you’ve ever fought back, that doesn’t make it your fault or make it “mutual.” Defending yourself in a moment of fear is not the same as being the one in control.
You are not weak for staying this long. You are not foolish for loving him. And the shame you’re carrying is not yours to hold. It belongs to the person causing the harm.
We know the fear of losing the house, the lifestyle, the image, the community that thinks your life is perfect. But no home, title or reputation is worth more than your peace, your safety and your sense of who you are. The life you’d be protecting is costing you yourself.
You don’t have to have it all figured out today. You don’t have to decide anything today. You just have to tell one person.
Talk to someone you trust. Call or text an advocate who can help you think it through and make a plan that keeps you safe. It’s free and confidential, and no one will judge you.
