CHAPTER 1 — THE NAME THEY FEARED
The bar was quiet that night.
Rain tapped against the windows while an old refrigerator hummed behind the counter.
Daniel Cross sat alone at the far end of the bar.
Fifty years old.
Tall, broad-shouldered, short gray hair.
He wore a dark jacket over a black shirt and drank his coffee slowly.
He had been sitting there for almost twenty minutes without saying a word.
At the other side of the room, four men were drinking beer.
They were loud.
Local guys.
The kind of men who acted like every place belonged to them.
Their leader, Travis, noticed Daniel.
He got up.
As he walked past, he deliberately slammed his shoulder into Daniel's.
Coffee spilled over the rim.
Travis stopped.
"Careful, grandpa."
The other men laughed.
Daniel looked down at his hand.
He wiped the coffee away with a napkin.
Then he took another sip.
Nothing else.
Travis stared at him.
"That's it?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Travis laughed and walked back to his table.
A few minutes later, he noticed Daniel's watch.
He came back.
"Nice watch."
Daniel continued drinking.
Travis reached toward his wrist.
Daniel calmly moved his arm away.
The movement was so simple that it somehow made the room quieter.
Travis leaned closer.
"You got a problem?"
Daniel slowly raised his eyes.
He looked directly into Travis's.
No anger.
No fear.
Nothing.
Just silence.
Travis waited for a response.
Daniel finally spoke.
His voice was quiet.
"Call Victor."
Travis frowned.
Daniel took another sip of coffee.
Then he said:
"Tell him Michael's father is here."
The smile disappeared from Travis's face.
One of the men at the table stopped laughing.
Another slowly lowered his beer.
Travis stared at Daniel.
"Michael?"
Daniel said nothing.
The four men suddenly looked at each other.
Because six years ago, Michael Cross had disappeared.
The police had called it an accident.
Daniel had called it the worst day of his life.
His son's body had been buried six years earlier.
Or at least...
that was what everyone had told him.
Daniel finished his coffee.
He placed a few bills on the counter.
Then he stood and walked toward the door.
Travis didn't stop him.
Nobody did.
But just before Daniel stepped outside, Travis finally spoke.
"Who are you?"
Daniel paused.
He didn't turn around.
"I'm his father."
Then he walked into the rain.
Behind him, Travis immediately pulled out his phone.
His hands were no longer steady.
He made one call.
When the other person answered, Travis said only four words:
"Michael's father is here."
There was silence on the other end.
Then the call suddenly ended.
Travis stared at the phone.
For the first time that night, he looked genuinely afraid.
Because six years ago, they had buried Michael Cross—and they had made one mistake they were about to regret.
