GAY KNIGHTS ON THE CIRCLE

During the summer of 1984, leaders of the LGBTQ+ community in Indianapolis organized a gathering on Monument Circle to celebrate the q***r community and increase visibility. During this time the police harassment and surveillance of gay men had gotten so bad that community leaders wanted to make significant change. Hundreds of LGBTQ+ Hoosiers came together to socialize, learn about their rights and listen to local activists. This was the largest public gathering of the LGBTQ+ community in the state at the time.

The gatherings on the circle were dubbed “Gay Knights on the Circle” and remained private until 1990. That year Hoosier activists made history with the state’s first major public Pride celebration - Celebration on the Circle. Since then the annual celebration has evolved into what we now know as Indy Pride.

In 2021 the Indiana Historical Bureau and Indy Pride erected a historical marker on Monument Circle commemorating the origins of Indiana Pride, and documenting the valuable works of activists in Indianapolis since the 1980s.
