Happy 136th DAR Founders Day and National DAR Day/Month of Service!

On October 11, 1890, four remarkable women—Mary Smith Lockwood, Mary Desha, Ellen Hardin Walworth, and Eugenia Washington—founded the Daughters of the American Revolution at a time when women could not vote in most elections and were excluded from patriotic lineage societies.

Mary Smith Lockwood asked, “Were there no mothers of the Revolution?”

Together, these women created more than a lineage society. They built an organization where women could lead, preserve history, advance education, and serve their country.

As founder Eugenia Washington declared, “We want a society founded on service.”

For 136 years, generations of Daughters have carried that vision forward. Today, on National DAR Day of Service, we honor their legacy through service to our communities.

In January 2027, the Paul Revere Chapter will proudly celebrate 130 years of women's leadership and service to Muncie and Delaware County!

Founded by women. Built by women. Led by women. United in service to America. 🇺🇸

Long before pink ribbons became a symbol of breast cancer awareness, there was Betty Ford. In 1974, First Lady Betty Ford spoke openly about her breast cancer diagnosis and mastectomy at a time when the disease was rarely discussed publicly. Her courage sparked a remarkable response. Women across America sought breast examinations in record numbers, more cancers were detected, and public support for cancer research grew. Betty Ford didn't just raise awareness. She led by example. She turned a deeply personal struggle into a national conversation that helped change how women approached their health. More than 50 years later, her legacy reminds us that awareness must lead to action—and that women facing breast cancer deserve not only advances in treatment, but compassion, encouragement, and unwavering support. Before the ribbons, there was courage. And Betty Ford helped lead the way.

🇺🇸 History, Service & Conservation!

The Paul Revere Chapter, NSDAR, gathered October 8 at Carnegie Library for an afternoon of history, fellowship, and service!

🗽 Our program, “The Lady & The Light: 140 Years of the Statue of Liberty,” explored the remarkable history and symbolism of Lady Liberty, the creative genius of Bartholdi and Eiffel, and the women whose voices were excluded from her 1886 dedication—a fascinating look at the enduring ideals of liberty and the women who fought to share in its promise.

Dr. Joan Graham Nathan shared about the National Service Animals Monument (NSAM), an initiative to honor the extraordinary animals and handlers who have served our nation in military service, law enforcement, search and rescue, and assistance roles. 🐾

❤️ DAR Month of Service: Members replenished the Community Closet at Maring-Hunt Library, helping provide necessities for elementary students participating in the Great Achievers after-school program.

🦋 Conservation News: Chair Sharon Jackson shared encouraging news for monarch butterflies! The eastern migratory population increased 64% at its Mexican wintering grounds compared with the previous year—a hopeful sign for conservation efforts.

🎂 Celebrating 136 Years of DAR! Founded October 11, 1890, the Daughters of the American Revolution is a lineage society built by women, funded by women, led by women, and for women. For 136 years, generations of Daughters have preserved our nation's history, promoted education, encouraged patriotism, and strengthened their communities through service.

Join the Paul Revere Chapter as we step into the secret world of George Washington’s Culper Spy Ring and the enduring mystery of “Agent 355.” Through maps, letters, coded messages, and primary-source evidence, this program explores the documented spy network, Anna Strong’s alleged signal system, the story of Liss, and the challenge of separating historical fact from later legend. A compelling look at espionage, patriotism, women’s history, and the importance of preserving the truest story the evidence will allow us to tell.
Guests and prospective members are welcome.

What a wonderful Constitution Week evening with the Paul Revere Chapter, NSDAR, Carnegie Library in Muncie, and travel journalist Bill Clevlen! We began with the Pledge of Allegiance, the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution, and the Mayor’s Constitution Week Proclamation—an appropriate reflection of Constitution Week’s purpose to encourage the study of the Constitution, its history, and the responsibilities of citizenship—before turning the evening over to Bill for a lively journey through presidential history.

Bill took us on a memorable trip through Presidential Road Trips: 100 Places to Explore and Experience the History of American Presidents, blending lighthearted laughter with meaningful remembrance and plenty of unexpected presidential history.

A little competitive Constitution trivia added to the fun:

🇺🇸 First president elected under the Constitution? George Washington.
🇺🇸 Election that ended in an Electoral College tie? 1800 — Jefferson and Burr.
🇺🇸 Future presidents who signed the Constitution? Just two — Washington and Madison.

Constitution Week has a special DAR history: DAR petitioned Congress for the observance in 1955, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into law in 1956.
