This past Friday was laundry night and I keep thinking about it and how something as simple as doing a load or two of laundry literally opens doors.
Without access to laundry, our neighbors aren't just uncomfortable; they're locked out of job interviews, some social services, and opportunities to change their situation.
Doing laundry isn't a small, simple thing. It's a big thing that determines whether someone gets a chance or gets turned away.
That's why we, Muncie Folk Collective, have these laundry nights- we're bringing the opportunity to wash clothes and blankets and gear directly to the people who need it most. No barriers, no judgement, just dignity.
This past Friday at laundry night we celebrated a birthday, talked in depth with a woman experiencing domestic violence, saw and helped new, nervous faces, and were able to connect people to other community resources. Today, one of our regulars is moving into their first apartment, and we couldn't be more excited for them.
These laundry nights matter, they can be a lifeline. They can be a door opening.
Big shoutout to the 8twelve Coalition for supporting the past two laundry nights. Without community involvement and support, as well as the help of our awesome volunteers, we couldn't continue to do the work we do!
