16000 lbs later, the house is “clean”!
That’s roughly the weight of a T.rex, my friends.

This is the first time we’d seen the actual floors in much of the house. In fact, there were areas that were impassable due to the debris, so it’s like finding new rooms! “The house just keeps going” as the contractor said.

Klutterkingsjunkremoval didn’t shy away from taking on this monumental task. They formulated a site-specific plan which included a conveyor belt.

There were a lot of challenges including unstable floors. A big hurdle was getting a dumpster close enough to the house—-elevation of the front facade, the size of the lot and proximity to neighboring houses all created a less than ideal situation.

Most of the heavy debris was the plaster from walls that the former owner had knocked out and left throughout the house. Pair that with wet/damp conditions and you’ve got a heavy load!

A long overdue shout-out to
George Lawncare LLC for an incredible job clearing out the overgrowth this summer so that we could start getting the house cleaned out and the roofing started!

Our roofers started work today!
First thing is to get the house sealed off—which means covering all 64 (yes, that’s right 64) windows.

I feel like the house probably took as big of a sigh of relief as I did when I heard the nailguns—knowing that this will finally stop further decay and that we now can begin to reverse years of neglect.

NOTICE TO BIDDERS

The Old Westend Neighborhood Economic Redevelopment Corporation (OWNER) is seeking a contractor to replace approximately 260 LF of gutters, repair 260 LF of eaves, remove and replace approximately 3600 SF of asphalt shingles, and remove and replace approximately 1300 SF of EPDM membrane roofing at 719 W. Charles St. Muncie, IN. All the necessary tools and materials are part of the project and to be provided by the Contractor. This project will be funded through the City’s Community Development Block Grant and the winning Bidder MUST NOT be debarred from federal work on the SAM.gov website prior to contract(s) being signed.

Bid proposals must be submitted as described below in a sealed envelope marked with the bidder’s name, address, and telephone number, and bearing the following caption: Bid for: 719 W. Charles - Phase 1 Bid Opening Date: 4/17/2023.
Bid responses must be emailed to OWNER at [email protected] or mailed in a sealed opaque envelope to be delivered to PO BOX 1614 Muncie, IN 47308 by 5 pm on 4/14/2023. Bid responses will be opened by OWNER on 4/17/2021. Contractor to be notified if they have the winning bid by 4/21/2023.

We are so excited to share this with you!

Very soon we will be announcing a call for pre-bids for roofing contractors at 719. When we do, we ask that you help us get the word out!
It’s a big job and does require extensive carpentry.

This the first and most critical phase of work to save the grand old beauty and it’s been a long time coming!

Huge thanks to Hoerstman Design Shop LLC for their hard work and preservation-minded plans and to City of Muncie Community Development Department for recognizing that this place matters and for moving us forward.

While we wait to get answers….on the box gutters and roof replacement…on basically everything…the situation at 719 is rapidly getting worse.

This video is what I found today while visiting the house. It’s beyond frustrating.

The architects (one of them I mention in the video) warned us in November about how bad the west elevation has gotten. It’s failing.
