An oldie but a goodie. ❤️

I went outside today.

The sun was warm
on my soft, old fur.
This is what heaven must be like
I’m sure.

As I sit here and think
about the life I once had,
I can’t help but smile
and feel grateful and glad.

I had been stuck inside a kennel
for far too long.
Each new day I was there
I wondered what did I do wrong?

The people at the shelter
gave me love I never knew.
My trust for humans began
and each day my heart grew.

They promised me my day would come
and that my family’s coming soon.
They told me these new people
would love me to the moon.

They took me out of my cage one day
but I never did return.
Little did I know
that it was finally my turn.

My life is now so different,
my worry has faded away.
I’m now a part of a family
and no longer labeled a stray.

So as I sit outside each time
and feel the sun on me,
I thank my lucky stars
for the ones that set me free.

I begged for a dog for 23 years.

Then came Jack.

23, new apartment, and the first thing I go out and get is a dog.

His one-eyed winking adoption picture stole my heart, so I took the trip to Paws Jackson to meet him.

We walked out together, my life now revolving around this lanky, sweet terrier mix.

He was the dog of my 20s. The one that was there for some of my biggest life events.

He was the star of my engagement to Tim.
He strutted down the aisle at our wedding, tie and all (see photo).
He moved around to 4 different places we called home.
He welcomed in 6 furry family members without hesitation.
He welcomed 1 not furry family member in, even though he knew our attention we gave him would begin to lack.
He road tripped with us.
He snuggled next to me in bed every single night these last 6 years.

He was the best.

And the fact that that statement is now past tense leaves a pit in my stomach that will be there for some time.

Our sweet Jack crossed the rainbow bridge today after months of slow decline.

A piece of my heart departed with him when his soul left.

I don’t remember a life before Jack and it’s hard to envision life without him. In an instant, he simply turned into a memory.

My heart is aching, hard.

Love on your pets. Enjoy their presence and unconditional love.

And please, oh please, adopt.
