Sweet! First trail work day of the season folks. Come join us this Saturday, April 26th. We're excited to work with the Forest Service and MSTA to make improvements to this trail.

Spring Trail Work Day this Saturday, April 26th! Come out and join us for a morning of making improvements to the trail to Faery Falls. SORA is working with Mount Shasta Trail Association and the USFS to make the trail safer and easier.

We’ll meet in front of the USFS Office on Alma St on Saturday, April 26 at 8:30am, then carpool near to Faery Falls (about a 10-15 minute drive).

MSTA will supply the tools. Dress for the weather (maybe it'll rain!), wear sturdy footwear and gloves, bring water and anything else you need to be comfortable. Expect to work till around noon, but feel free to leave earlier if needed.

We're looking forward to a great season of trail works folks. It will be great to see you all out there.

Wow! What a trail work session! Huge thanks to the 15 people who came out Saturday afternoon! We split up and were able to do work from the top of Steamdonkey and all the way down MX. We had folks from Mount Shasta Mountain Bike Association, Shasta Gravity Adventures, Siskiyou Outdoor Recreation Alliance, Mount Shasta Trail Association, and some brand new volunteers. So good to work in moist dirt! Thanks everyone!

There is one more trail work day coming this Saturday after the Ski and Board Swap. Join us Saturday, November 2nd at 1pm to help fix ruts, braking bumps, berms, and corners on MX and possibly portions of Fade to Black. We may work higher up, depending on what the mid-week storm brings (we are so doing a rain and snow dance!)

Meet at the railroad crossing on Old McCloud Rd/FS31 near the bottom of MX. Plan to dress warmly, bring work gloves and be ready for changing conditions. We'll be out for a few hours to do what we can; stay for as long as you like. We'll bring tools and hard hats.

We'll see you out there! It's been a really successful, fruitful trail work season and we appreciate all of the folks who have come out to support our trails.

We had a great work day on Magma last Sunday atfer Mount Shasta Mountain Bike Association's Fall Bike Festival helping Trail Labs on this highly technical build. One crew raked tread while another cut out some big trees. It's taking a whole lot of labor to build this downhill preferred trail that has big rock features, jumps and gaps. The Trail Labs crew is pushing hard to have it done before it snows as part of the Gateway II expansion led by Mount Shasta Trail Association.

The trail is posted as closed, with tape and signs at the entry. It will remain closed until construction is complete and it's signed off by our partners at U.S. Forest Service - Shasta-Trinity National Forest. It's sad to see Trail Labs post this on Instagram:

two riders "decided to ignore our trail closed signs and information about sensitive soil conditions on new trails, and put tracks down everything we had built. Unfortunately, rain and cold came next and the trail is now set up with these tracks 😔. We will have to go back over much of the trail to try and break these up and rerake everything before more rain comes.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE respect the trails, those who build them, and those who support the process. This is especially the case if you’re visiting an area. Be a good guest and respectfully avoid trail closures. "

You can help on this trail by connecting with Trail Labs via their Instagram account.

We had such a good time last Friday on our final workday on the Learning Zone trails at the Nordic Center that we forgot to take photos! Big thanks to the volunteers who came out to do the last bit of finishing work. Now we'll wait for rain and, since these are new trails, we'll also wait for our partners at the Forest U.S. Forest Service - Shasta-Trinity National Forest to inspect and sign off on these so they can be opened.

Siskiyou Outdoor Recreation Alliance along with Mount Shasta Trail Association have so much gratitude to the dozens of volunteers who spent hundreds of hours on these trails last fall and this year to finish up the work. We couldn't have done it without all of you.

Enjoy a selection of photos from various volunteer days over the past two years.

South Siskiyou County recreation lovers- we want to hear from you! We hope you were able to attend one of the South Siskiyou Sustainable Recreation Planning meetings this May. If not, that's okay. SORA just released two draft documents for your review and input. The Community Engagement Summary collects the public input we received and the Recreation Needs Assessment begins to put a whole lot of information into a plan format. You can find both of those documents at https://siskiyououtdooralliance.org/rec-plan. We'll be holding public input meetings this winter and we'd love to hear your comments on both of these documents. Community engagement is at the heart of this planning process, so please spend some time giving these a good read.

Trail volunteers and community members- we've got exciting news: with one more volunteer day, the Learning Zone trails at the Nordic Center will be finished! Join us on Friday, October 4th for a final morning to wrap things up!

Trail work days in 2023 and 2024 have largely been focused on the Learning Zone trails of the Gateway System Phase II build led by Mount Shasta Trail Association. Volunteers have put in hundreds of hours on these trails at the Nordic Center after Trail Labs cut them in. After a remarkable 640 hours of work done by the U.S. Forest Service - Shasta-Trinity National Forest ForestCorps crews in August, these trails are nearly complete!

On Friday, Oct 4th we'll be holding the last of the work days to finish a few sections of trail to connect them to the road. We'll be raking to make those trail connections and possibly putting in some trail signs. Join us at the Nordic Center parking lot at 9am next Friday. We plan to work until around noon. Come dressed for trail work and fall weather - long pants, boots and gloves. SORA and MSTA will provide the tools and hard hats.

Join Bike Shasta in a celebration of mountain biking. Shuttles, music, food, beverages, a trail work day, trike race and a Super Mario themed party? Now that sounds like a good time!

Bike Shasta is hosting a mountain biking celebration, and you’re invited! Join us for a fun-filled event, and feel free to come dressed in your favorite Super Mario themed costumes.

The celebration at Spring Hill Nursery on Oct 12th (from 4-6:30pm) will be followed on Sunday, Oct 13th with a trail work day. Details on that to follow, but we’re hoping to get to work on a new, as of yet un-opened trail.

And you can check out Shasta Gravity’s new shop by going there on Saturday (from 1-3pm) for a free 10 Gallon shuttle as part of our Fall Bike Festival.

Honor Trail Closures - we'll all appreciate it later

We got a little dusting of rain and that's great. But it wasn't enough to warrant opening up the new trails in the Gateway system. Hopefully you saw the post last week about staying off of closed trails, but here it is again:

Stay. Off. Closed. Trails.

Please.

It's that simple. Our mountain soils are delicate and these new trails won't survive use until they get significant, deep ground soaking rain. Whether its bike tires, horses' hooves or human feet, these soils can't bear the impact yet. We're all looking forward to getting out on these wonderful new trails. But we haven't got enough rain. Please stay patient. Honor closure signs and red tape by choosing to point your feet, bike or horse down one of the many open trails. If we can collectively be disciplined for a little while longer, rain will come heavy enough that we can open trails. Until then, be a considerate trail user and stay off the closed trails. Thank you.

List of closed trails (as of 17 Sept 2024):
- all of the trails in the Learning Zone at the Nordic Center
- Deadwood
- Magma
- the very bottom of Bear Springs from the 31 Road to the Blvd

Mount Shasta Trail Association Mount Shasta Mountain Bike Association U.S. Forest Service - Shasta-Trinity National Forest Shasta Gravity Adventures

Spread the word: being a thoughtful, considerate trail user means heading trail closures.

Oh boy, we've got a trail work day coming up this Saturday. We're excited to be working on the Sisson Callahan Trail with The Watershed Research and Training Center and we hope you're fired up to join us. We'll be meeting at the Parks Creek Trailhead Saturday at 9am, where we'll then carpool down the road a bit to get to the trail. It's a day of lopping brush and clearing vegetation on the section that goes up to Bull Lake. Bring your lunch, come prepared for fall weather, and dress in appropriate clothing (pants, boots, gloves). Join us for as little or as much time as you can!

Please click the link to RSVP if you plan to join. We need a head count for tools and cold beverages!

It's a terrific thing to have some many enthusiastic, capable partners in trail work: Mount Shasta Trail Association, Mount Shasta Mountain Bike Association, U.S. Forest Service - Shasta-Trinity National Forest, The Watershed Research and Training Center
