A 134 year old chapel has been demolished today due to severe neglect resulting in permanent damage. That damage has now become disaster.

We were informed on Monday night that the historic church at 52 Cooper was permitted for demolition by the City building official with no public hearing or notice. Despite a last-minute meeting on site on Tuesday morning with preservation groups, ECDC president, the City, the developer and their contractor and architect, the building was demolished this morning. Promises were made at the meeting that the developer would meet with the ECDC this evening and that they would salvage everything they could to re-use it when the building is rebuilt. The church is now a pile of rubble and the hope of salvage is dashed.

The City needs to do better. This property sat in great disrepair for many years and the City did nothing to enforce the regulations that are in place to protect vulnerable structures. Our historic resources deserve better. The neighbors deserve better. The neighborhood deserves better. Our city deserves better.

We here at Save our Structures are mourning a loss today, but we are not discouraged. The Eastside neighborhood of Charleston needs our help. They need our eyes and ears. They need the protection that has been stripped from them.

Built in 1940, 890 Ashley Avenue still stands tall today. We have many people to thank for this restoration including Generation Homes Inc, Finest City Homes, James Barber, and Good Neighbor Carpentry.

This is a sad week for preservationists and all of the amazing Charlestonians that care so much about history and its erasure here in Charleston SC. Dash Hall is an important piece of history that we are sure brought joy to the disenfranchised and persecuted in this city. This is only the start though… you all have the power to speak out in your community and be heard (we promise that it helps more than you think). We aren’t slowing down. We aren’t giving up on Charleston. But we can’t do this without the people of Charleston. We thank you millions for all for the contributions already made through speaking out or otherwise.

Our fearless leader, Julie O’Connor, received a South Carolina Historic Preservation Award on Thursday, 30th of July 2026. Presented by The SC Governor’s office, Preservation SC, and SC Department of Archives and History, we are very humbled by this honor. John Hildreth, Chairman of Preservation South Carolina, said the following:

“Founded in 2018, Save our Structures Charleston has become an indispensable resource for identifying documents and advocating for vulnerable historic buildings on the Charleston Peninsula. The creation of a comprehensive survey of threatened properties and its innovative, public facing, interactive map. SOS Charleston has transformed technical preservation data into an accessible tool for residents, policymakers and preservation advocates. By documenting change, supporting informal policy, and promoting the stewardship of historic resources before they’re lost, SOS Charleston has made an exceptional contribution in service to historic preservation in South Carolina.”

Officially finished in December of 2025, this property was already over 100 years old at that point. The amazing work spearheaded by Suncap Property Group is clear and impressive. The historic features of this house were preserved and the structure is no longer endangered. 16 Maverick is now updated to SAVED (green) on our Survey map @ soschs.com !

Success Story! This project at 128 Romney Street was finalized in 2021; saving an absolutely beautiful property that the City of Charleston fought to protect. So many amazing contractors and sub-contractors made this whole restoration possible.

The house that started it all…

This success story starts with an over 130 year old structure (built 1885-1895) that you can find on our survey site (link in bio). Restoration was finished in 2024, winning a Carolopolis award in 2026. The transformation is nothing short of heroic. Without straying too far from the original design, and their team restored this building to its former glory. They say pictures are truly are a thousand words and all we can really say is… wow!
