Need for housing for Coast Guard Personnel and their families!

Today the Coast Guard has about 1,300 personnel in the region and that number is projected to grow to 2,300 by 2030. Approximately, 5,290 dependent family members will accompany the additional personnel; creating an even greater need for affordable housing. US Coast Guard salaries range from $26,200 to $156,965 with an average salary of $85,610 which would allow for the purchase of a $342,440 home or apartment rent of $1,783 per month, which is below what new apartments are renting for in Charleston.

If we start today, the development process for new homes or apartment homes takes 24 months. We need your help and support. Let's go!

Good Morning! I am inquiring about your program of affordable rentals in the Mt. Pleasant area.

I currently rent in Mount Pleasant. I’ve been here 2.5 years and have seen my rent go up from $1495.00 to $1897.00 for a one-bedroom/one-bath unit.

I currently make $59,000.00/year and live alone.

Is there an application I can fill out to be qualified for rentals in Mt. Pleasant?

Congratulations Richard Habersham, the president of Mount Pleasant’s Phillips Community. He was recognized in September 2023 by the National Register of Historic Places as a “traditional cultural place”—a national first for a Black Settlement Community As he has been a vocal advocate for his community and has led the fight to protect his neighborhood and its surrounding wetlands from development.

In October 2023, he presented the Southern Environmental Law Center with a Distinguished Service Award from the Phillips Community Association for their work representing Phillips community residents in challenging Charleston County’s plans to expand Highway 41 through the historic Phillips Settlement Community.

December 12th, 2023, at the Town of Mount Pleasant Council Meeting Mr. Habersham was presented the Cresco Historical Stewardship Award Winner for 2023.
