Charlotte just took a major step forward for wildlife and community-led conservation.

Last week, City Council unanimously voted to amend local vegetation ordinances, allowing taller plant growth for residents gardening for wildlife. The updated policy creates an exemption from the city’s 12-inch vegetation height limit for properly maintained, wildlife-supporting gardens.

Native plants often grow taller than traditional turf grass lawns, but they play a critical role in supporting birds, pollinators, and other wildlife. This change removes a longstanding barrier for residents intentionally planting for habitat.

The amendment follows months of advocacy led by the Charlotte Wildlife Stewards Chapter of North Carolina Wildlife Federation, along with a coalition of local organizations and residents who spoke up for urban nature.

By adopting this exemption, the City of Charlotte is aligning policy with sustainability, biodiversity, and community health goals. It provides clarity for residents, reduces the risk of code violations, and encourages stronger wildlife habitat in neighborhoods across the city.

This is a meaningful step forward and a model for other municipalities across North Carolina!

Big congrats to Kentrell Walker who took his first deer at the young age of 21, all while fighting Spina Bifida. Help us send this young man some congratulations, prayers, and good vibes.

Weedy fields feed more wildlife than most tidy gardens.
Native plants build natural seed banks that carry birds and small mammals through lean seasons.

• A mature ragweed plant can drop thousands of seeds that winter sparrows rely on
• Thistle heads fuel migrating goldfinches during their late-season journey
• Wild sunflowers and coneflowers provide oil-rich seeds birds cache for later
• Dense grasses shelter insects that bluebirds and other insect-eaters feed their young
• Undisturbed soil protects earthworms that robins and thrushes depend on
• “Weeds” often function as survival food when other sources disappear

What looks unkept is often a fully stocked pantry for wildlife.
