Dear Friends, (Old and New)
We hope this email finds you all well.
Many of you have asked us about Cambodia. “Are you still going to Cambodia?”. YES! We are!
Our last visit was October 2022. With your help, we have been able to support a second village. PuTru is extremely remote and extremely impoverished as it is cut off from everything when it rains. And, it rains a lot! There is no electricity. There are no wells or latrines (other than the one well Cake for Kids (CFK) built and three latrines that CFK built. )
In October 2023 after several tries we were able to attain a visa for Inn Chret to come to the USA! You may recall Inn is our In-Country Program Manager and we could not do what we do without him! Inn was here for the month of November. He spoke at Duke, UNC and at our daughter-in-law Savannah’s elementary school in Flat Rock, N.C. (where he was a real hit!) We gave him a great taste of the US including DisneyWorld and a NHL ice hockey game (Inn is probably still cold!)
This year we will be in Cambodia for the month of June. We are fortunate enough to have Savannah join us for 10 days. Oreang commune has become more self sustainable, and with the addition of wells and latrines it is an improved village.
This year's efforts center around PuTru. CFK will be building 4 wells and 7 toilets, supplying school and library materials, pigs and chickens for 4 families, clothing, 500 kilos of rice, 2 swing sets, water tanks and water stands, 10 water purifiers, white boards and filing cabinets to store all the school supplies and to keep the elephants away from the books 🤣and more. This will be our largest effort yet! And to think that back in 2009 this started with $500 from friends and colleagues!
