Skiing in Switzerland is extremely popular!

And Switzerland is know for its many resorts with over 250 resorts in the country. The scenery of Swiss resorts is unlike anything you've ever seen. Most of the resorts are located in the Alps with stunning views, famous mountain peaks and picturesque Swiss mountain villages.

Gstaad and Dt. Moritz are considered the most expensive resorts catering to celebrities and royalty. Both resort towns have luxury hotels and real estate and many Michelin-starred restaurants.

While staying at these resorts may be expensive, the price for a lift ticket is much lower than ski resorts in Colorado. Ticket prices range from $35 for smaller local resorts to $100 for larger more popular resorts.

Did you know?

The Swiss love hiking!

According to a national study, the average Swiss goes on 20 hikes a year and approximately 80% of the population uses trails to go jogging, hiking, walking, etc. The Swiss hiking network is expansive with a total of over 40,000 miles of hiking trails in the country. It makes sense given that 60% of Switzerland is covered by mountains. Hiking is popular because the Swiss have a strong appreciation for nature, the outdoors and outdoor activities. Getting to hikes is easy because the Swiss have such a great public transportation system.

Trails also have these extremely informative trail signs (second picture).
1. Indicates your current location and altitude above sea level.
2. Possible destinations with the top one being the closest one.
3. Estimated hiking time to the destination
4. Level of difficulty
5. This divider indicates a fork in the road further on
6. Symbols indicating points of interest along the Route

Did you know?

The Red Cross was established in Geneva, Switzerland in 1863. The Red Cross is an international humanitarian organization that provides aid and assistance to people worldwide, specifically targeted to those experiencing crisis or conflict. The Red Cross flag is the inverse of the Swiss flag, which probably explains why the two are commonly confused by foreigners.

Today, the Red Cross has over 97 million volunteers across the world and its headquarters remain in Geneva.

Did you know?

The Pontifical Swiss Guard, also know as the Papal Swiss Guard or just the Swiss Guard, is considered the smallest army in the world, made up of 135 members, and solely responsible for guarding the Pope. They have been doing this job since 1506! The blue, red and yellow striped uniform are the same uniforms worn in the 1500s.

Candidates must be a male Swiss citizen, practicing Catholic and a person of impeccable health and reputation. The guard reports directly to the Pope and are separate from Switzerland's Armed Forces. They are hired by the Roman Catholic Church.
