Prevention Works- Healthy Region 6

Prevention Works- Healthy Region 6 Bringing awareness to Conway, Faulkner,Johnson, Perry, Pope, and Yell Counties about Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Prevention

What We Do:
Our prevention department works to create conditions for individuals, families, and communities where "bad" things are less likely to happen. Prevention is something that individuals must do on a daily basis in order to create conditions where bad things don't occur just like brushing your teeth prevents you from getting cavities. With regard to drug prevention, we create norms and

policies to eliminate underage drinking or illegal drug abuse. Our Prevention programs are designed to do the following:
-Create measurable changes in risk and/or protective factors of an identified target population
-Use developmentally appropriate strategies (evidence-based) to impact risk factors or enhance protective factors
-Support the work of anti-drug coalitions, community and neighborhood organizations, institutions, and citizens to address prevention at the community level

Prevention is more than saying “no.”
Prevention is helping young people feel connected, supported, and empowered to make healthy choices.

Protective factors like positive adult relationships, school involvement, mental wellness, and healthy activities all play a role in reducing substance misuse and improving overall well-being.

During National Prevention Week, we celebrate the individuals, schools, coalitions, organizations, and families working every day to strengthen our communities. đź’Ş

🌟 It’s National Prevention Week! 🌟

This week, we join communities across the country in recognizing the power of prevention and the importance of creating healthy, safe, and supportive environments for youth, families, and communities.

Prevention works — and it starts with education, connection, and community involvement. Whether it’s substance misuse prevention, mental health promotion, or building protective factors for youth, every positive action matters.

Together, we can help create brighter futures for everyone. đź’™

National Prevention Week is a nationwide effort to raise awareness about substance misuse prevention and mental health promotion.

Prevention On & Off the Course in Action! ⛳👏

Sam Taylor, Region 6 Prevention Representative, is spending the week engaging students at Russellville Intermediate School through the Prevention On & Off the Course program.

This innovative program combines substance misuse prevention education with hands-on golf skills, giving students a fun and interactive way to learn about making healthy choices. By incorporating physical activity into prevention messaging, students are able to build confidence, develop new skills, and strengthen protective factors such as positive decision-making and healthy coping strategies.

Through this approach, Sam is helping students connect real-life skills with prevention concepts—making the lessons both memorable and meaningful. Great work bringing creativity and engagement into prevention programming! 💙

Amy Mellick-Wetzel, Region 6 Prevention Representative, and Sierra Whitbey with the American Lung Association spoke with students at Dardanelle Middle School yesterday about the RAAD (Rise Above Alcohol and Drugs) initiative.

Students learned about risk and protective factors, as well as important information on va**ng and ni****ne prevention. These conversations help empower youth to make healthy choices and become leaders in prevention within their schools and communities.

Thank you to Kim Walters and the Project Prevent Youth Coalition for having us!
