A small group of Audubon Mountaineers gathered at the Snake Hill Wildlife Management Area to watch the American Woodcock courtship display. We weren't disappointed. The bonus was two whip-poor-wills tuned up. What a treat!

During last nights Woodcock Walk, I was asked about the longest flight of a Woodcock. Through the work of the Eastern American Woodcock Cooperative, in the photo are the details of the longest documented flight of a woodcock. This was possible with the use of GPS transmitter the bird was wearing.

Nine of us gathered at dusk, stepping into the cool hush of an early‑spring evening. Temperatures dipped into the lower 40s, but the promise of the American Woodcock’s sky dance was more than enough to keep spirits warm.

As the light faded, the first pneet echoed across the field—sharp, comical, unmistakable. Moments later, the male lifted into his spiraling display flight, wings whistling as he climbed, circled, and tumbled back to earth. Each ascent felt like a small gift offered to anyone patient enough to listen.

A line from Aldo Leopold fit the night perfectly:
“To those devoid of imagination, a blank place on the map is a useless waste; to others, the most valuable part.”

Thank you to everyone who joined us to witness this timeless ritual. Even in the chill, the woodcock reminded us how much wonder lives in the margins.

If you don't want to venture out into the potential cold, then you can always do a feeder count. Just observe your feeders for a short period of time (or all morning if you like), and use this checklist to let us know the birds you see: https://tinyurl.com/2j8b8szu

Just a reminder that you can join us TOMORROW MORNING for birding around Cheat Lake!

Mountaineer Audubon is sponsoring a field trip to the Cheat Lake area this Saturday, November 22. Join us to seek out arriving waterfowl on Cheat Lake! We will convene in the parking lot behind Chestnut Ridge Church at 8:00 am before we head out.

This trip will be focused on migrating waterfowl. Walking should be pretty minimal except at Cheat Lake Park where participants may walk up to a mile or so on a flat, well-maintained trail depending on where the birds are. Dress for the weather; as "bad" weather can offer the best birding, the trip is a go as long as the roads are safe to drive. No advanced registration or cost is required. If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch any time.

Trip leader Derek Courtney will be at the Almost Heaven cafe (adjacent to Chestnut Ridge Church) at 7:00 am if any participants need a caffeine fix, breakfast, and or socializing before we head out. Hope to see you all there!

In exactly one month, the Morgantown Christmas Bird Count will take place on Saturday, December 20!

We have had a fair number of people interested in volunteering to join us for the CBC so far, which is awesome! If you haven't yet let CBC coordinator Derek Courtney know of your interest, please do so and we can get a plan for coverage on the count day. Also, please feel free to share widely if any of your friends and family would also be interested in joining in.

It's time to start thinking about the annual Morgantown Christmas Bird Count in December!

Here's a message from our Christmas Bird Count (CBC) Coordinator, Derek Courtney:

In just over 2 months, the Christmas Bird Count season will officially kick off! For Morgantown, Count Day is Saturday, December 20, 2025. Count Week is December 17-23, 2025 so if you're birding locally, keep an eye out for unusual species.

You can join in by birding in the field, or watching for birds at your feeders if you live within the count circle. Or both! I am coordinating once more, so if you want to join in, just contact me at derek.dana.courtney[at]gmail.com.

New for this year, National Audubon has given us the opportunity to use an additional platform for sign-ups and communication. Our CBC Circle has its own website here:
https://www.mobilize.us/audubon-community-science/event/857362/ that you all can use to sign up if you wish. You will also be able to communicate with the group at large. I have set up each sector with its own private website as well for information and communication purposes. On the Circle website you can see basic information and resources for our count with a short description of our team areas. Feel free to contact me with any questions. I will also update that main page with more information/resources as we get closer to count day.
