This Saturday, June 6, young men from The Overflow will be serving two local families through a Community Landscaping & Lawn Care Service Project.

Together we will:
🌱 Plant flowers
🌿 Cut grass and trim yards
🤝 Serve families in need
💙 Learn the value of giving back to our community

This project is about more than landscaping. It is an opportunity for young men to develop character, compassion, responsibility, and a servant's heart while making a real difference in the lives of others. All supplies, equipment, and lunch will be provided.

The families we are serving are excited and grateful, and we are looking forward to a meaningful day together.

Interested in participating? Register through our RSVP form for complete details. This activity is open to middle and high school age male youth.

A hands-on service initiative where youth learn basic landscaping and lawn care skills while serving elderly neighbors, widows, and single mothers in the community.

At The Overflow, agriculture is one of the core programs we offer because it teaches so much more than planting seeds. Through hands-on experiences in our gardens and outdoor learning spaces, young men learn responsibility, patience, problem-solving, teamwork, stewardship, and the value of hard work. They discover where food comes from, how healthy soil supports healthy communities, and how serving others can create lasting impact.

This summer, participants will have opportunities to help grow produce that supports local families while gaining practical skills they can carry with them for a lifetime.

But agriculture is just one piece of what we have planned!

Our Summer Outdoor Program includes:
🌱 Agriculture & Trades Programs
🥾 Hiking & Outdoor Adventures
🧗 Rock Climbing
🎣 Fishing
🌊 River Tubing
🏹 Archery & Marksmanship
🏕 Camping Experiences
🎬 Outdoor Movie Nights & Bonfires
🔥 Mentorship, Leadership Development, and Life Skills

Every activity is designed to help young men build confidence, character, resilience, and purpose through meaningful outdoor experiences and positive mentorship.

Sponsors are needed to help keep these programs FREE of cost.

Today the boys learned how to use various tools to make planter boxes for their moms for Mother’s Day. They each shared why they appreciate their moms and wrote notes on the bottom of the planters. They used words like “sacrifice”, “kind”, “makes sure I have what I need”, “gets me what I need when money is tight”. One boy wrote to his mom “you are enough”. During the workshop they paid close attention to safety protocols, asked questions, and were very engaged. It was a fun and meaningful project!

We're excited to in welcome Dr. Tonya Little to our Advisory Board. Dr. Little serves as Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Programs at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, where she continues a lifelong commitment to expanding STEM opportunities for diverse and underserved students in rural communities across North Carolina. A transformational educational leader, Dr. Little is recognized for creating innovative STEM ecosystems that connect rigorous academics, community partnerships, and real-world problem solving.

Dr. Little believes that Lonnie Johnson, NASA engineer and inventor of the “Super Soaker” has a quote that best describes her passion for STEM ecosystems, “For me, it’s almost magical being able to come up with ideas and then have them materialize.”

Among her proudest accomplishments was leading Riverside Middle School to earn STEM identification from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. During her leadership, the school culture was transformed through cross-grade-level teacher collaboration, strategic use of data walls and data analysis to drive student achievement, and the creation of award-winning robotics programs, science research groups, and integrated agricultural STEM initiatives. She introduced 4-H as a school-integrated club and developed a 12-bed school garden that partnered with local mom-and-pop restaurants and a fine-dining establishment to connect students with entrepreneurship, sustainability, and community engagement.

Dr. Little also championed authentic student research experiences. Under her guidance, middle school students conducted research on sugar and caffeine addiction using flatworms in collaboration with a Temple University researcher. Their work earned an invitation to present at the annual National Science Foundation conference in Washington, D.C.

In 2017, Dr. Little returned home to Elizabeth City, North Carolina, to help lay the foundation for the STEM identity of Northeast Academy for Aerospace and Advanced Technologies, a regional public charter school. There, she helped establish the robotics program, community internship initiatives, and interdisciplinary STEM curriculum designed to prepare students for college, careers, and regional workforce opportunities.

Her STEM leadership journey ultimately brought her full circle back to her high school alma mater, the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, where she now serves on the Morganton campus as Associate Vice Chancellor/Associate Provost, continuing her mission to inspire innovation, access, and excellence in STEM education throughout North Carolina.

Dr. Little is a mother of three and a grandmother of two. You can find her most weekends working in her garden with her Great Pyrenees, Mufasa.

Join us for a hands-on work day as we finish building out our garden beds! This space is more than just a garden—it’s a place where youth learn responsibility, teamwork, and practical skills through working the land. As we prepare for the growing season, we’re inviting volunteers to come alongside us, lend a hand, and be part of something that gives back to our community. The food grown here will help support families, and the experience will help shape the next generation. Whether you have experience or not, your help makes a difference. Join us Saturday, May 9 from 8:30 am - 12 pm.

We’re getting our hands in the dirt and bringing the garden to life.

This hands-on workshop is designed for middle and high school male youth to learn real skills while working together outdoors. Participants will learn proper planting techniques, spacing, watering, and how to care for crops throughout the growing season.

We’ll also be finishing setup on our beehives alongside a 3rd generation Master Beekeeper, Foothills Farm & Apiary LLC. , giving youth a unique opportunity to learn about pollination, bees, and their role in the food system.

Even better—youth who participate will be eligible to receive fresh produce for their families throughout the growing season.

Breakfast will be provided.
No cost to attend.
Open to middle and high school male youth.

Come ready to work, learn, and be part of something meaningful.
