Volunteer Interest Meeting

Men, your time and experience can make a difference in the life of a young man.

The Overflow serves young men ages 11–18 through mentoring, outdoor experiences, agriculture, trades, service, and character development. We are looking for men who are willing to show up, share their skills and experiences, and help invest in the next generation. Join us for our online Volunteer Interest Meeting to learn more about The Overflow’s mission and vision, our current needs, volunteer opportunities, and the next steps for becoming a trained Overflow volunteer.

You don’t have to be an expert or have a particular skill set—you simply need a willingness to serve, learn, and be a positive presence in the lives of young men. This volunteer opportunity is for men ages 18 and older and will require a background check. Come learn how you can be part of helping young men develop character, practical skills, confidence, and purpose.

This summer, young men at The Overflow NC Inc tried new things, worked through challenges, got their hands dirty, and discovered what they were capable of.

Through fishing, gardening, trades training, outdoor adventures, and serving their community, they had opportunities to practice responsibility, perseverance, courage, teamwork, and servant leadership in real-life situations.

As a current We Raise grantee, The Overflow is helping young men build practical skills while developing the character and confidence to use those skills well. We’re grateful to support their work as they grow into who they were created to be and learn how to positively influence their families, schools, workplaces, and communities. ❤️

We’ve been talking a lot about perseverance at The Overflow lately. It’s easy to keep going when things are going well. Perseverance shows up when they aren’t.

It’s finishing the hike when your legs are tired. Staying with a job when it’s hot and you’d rather quit. Trying again when you don’t get something right the first time. Doing the schoolwork when it’s frustrating. Serving someone else even when it’s inconvenient.

We want our young men to understand that hard moments aren’t always a reason to stop. Sometimes they’re the very moments that build us.

So whether we’re working in the garden, hiking a trail, learning a trade, serving our community, or just working through something difficult together, we’re asking:

What does perseverance look like right now?

Keep going. Ask for help when you need it. Learn from the mistake. Encourage the person beside you. Finish what you started.

These lessons go far beyond a program day. They’re lessons for school, work, relationships, service, and life.

At The Overflow, the activity may change, but the purpose remains the same: building character in young men that will carry them through the hard things.

It was a small group for today’s 4-mile hike and fishing expedition, but the boys did a great job! Along the way, we talked about perseverance—continuing to push forward even when the trail gets long and you’re tired.

We’re especially thankful for the men who showed up today to walk alongside these young men and help lead. From the beginning, we’ve envisioned The Overflow as a place where boys can learn from men who have walked the path before them—men willing to share their time, wisdom, encouragement, and example.

There’s something powerful about one generation intentionally investing in the next. We’re grateful for every opportunity to speak life, build character, and remind these young men of who they can become.

When we teach trades, we’re doing much more than teaching a skill. We’re teaching responsibility, patience, problem-solving, perseverance, and the confidence that comes from seeing a job through to the end.

Whether it’s building a raised garden bed, using tools safely, changing the oil in a vehicle, planting a garden, or learning basic woodworking, every task becomes an opportunity to build character.

From seed to harvest, the garden has been tended by young men who are learning the value of hard work that produces fruit. So many life lessons are taught in the garden. It is a blessing to donate food to our community.
