Uncompahgre Valley Trail Riders Snowmobile & ATV Club-Montrose, Colorado Year-round ATV & snowmobile club in Montrose, CO. We maintain trails, host group rides, and welcome new members! Message or email for info.

Looking for a way to experience the incredible trails and scenery of Southwest Colorado? Look no further than Uncompahgre Valley Trail Riders (UVTR) — Montrose’s original all-terrain vehicle and snowmobile club. Founded in 1999 by Roy and Elaine Johnson, UVTR has grown into a volunteer-based nonprofit dedicated to responsible off-road recreation and public land stewardship. The club maintains over

20 adopted trails across the Uncompahgre Plateau, surrounding mountain ranges, and BLM areas — partnering with USFS and BLM to clear, report, and protect trail access for all users. In addition to trail work, UVTR hosts weekly group rides, monthly meetings, and engages with the local community to promote safe, sustainable outdoor adventure. As Roy Johnson once said:

“When my wife and I moved here in 1998, there wasn’t an ATV club in Montrose.”

Now, thanks to their vision, UVTR is keeping the trails open — and the throttle wide — for future generations.

Club Easter Egg Hunt on the Saturday before Easter Sunday. We had 16 hardy souls show up to brave the questionable weather (turned out GREAT!) We traveled the Roubideau Rim Trail to the end and ran into the Easter Bunny’s stomping grounds. There must have been a 1,000 eggs laying around there. ( Maybe NOT) But for sure 100’s! Spent some time there gathering eggs, having lunch and trying to figure out how to get back to the truck. Finally headed East and got lucky…THE TRUCKS were THERE!!! Stopped at Rockin’ W for ICE CREAM on the way home!

Big news for western Colorado’s public lands! 🎉

The Bureau of Land Management has officially acquired the Escalante Ranch, a 4,000+ acre inholding within the Dominguez‑Escalante National Conservation Area. This incredible conservation win protects miles of canyon, river, wildlife habitat, and cultural history while expanding public access to one of the most spectacular landscapes in western Colorado.

The acquisition was made possible through funding from the Land and Water Conservation Fund, with key support from Great Outdoors Colorado, The Conservation Fund, and the Bureau of Land Management working together to bring this land into public ownership.

For us at Colorado Canyons Association, this is a huge win for conservation, recreation, and the future of our National Conservation Lands. We’re excited to continue educating the community and stewarding these landscapes alongside our federal partners.

As visitation grows, we can all help protect Escalante Canyon by keeping a few things in mind:

🌿 Take care of the canyon
Stay on established routes, use pit toilets where available, and pack out all waste from campsites and recreation areas.

🚜 Be mindful of neighboring landowners
Please respect posted private property and agricultural areas near access points, and drive slowly when traveling in and out of the canyon.

🦅 Watch for wildlife closures
Seasonal raptor nesting protections may begin around mid-March in some areas. These temporary closures help give nesting birds the space they need to successfully raise their young.

Together, we can help ensure this incredible place remains protected and accessible for generations to come.
