New to Vermont and thinking about learning some survival skills?

If you have ever wondered how people create fire by "rubbing sticks together" this class is for you. Join Vermonter Dug North from Season 12 of History Channel’s survival show "ALONE" for a full day of wilderness skills training in Roxbury, Vermont.

You will learn to use a knife safely, how to prepare and start a campfire, a few essential knots, and all the steps to make and use a bow drill set to create fire.

There are plenty of places to see live music: bigger venues, louder rooms, tickets, lines.

And then there are places like the Whammy Bar.

Tucked into the back of the Maple Corner Community Store in Calais, it’s part of something bigger than a night out. The store itself is a true community hub: deli running all day, breakfast sandwiches in the morning, a quick stop that turns into a longer one. It’s the kind of place people rely on in the community.

The space shifts with the day. During daylight hours, the back room is open for remote work, coffee, meeting a friend.

By evening, it turns into something else entirely: dinner on the table, a few tables filled, and a band setting up just a few feet away. No stage barrier, no reservations, no real separation between who’s playing and who showed up.

If you’re new to Vermont, or thinking about making a life here, this is the kind of place that helps it click.

This Saturday, April 18th, The VT Bluegrass Pioneers play from 7–9pm. Real-deal, old-school bluegrass performed by seasoned pros. Come check it out!
