🗞️Check out this lovely and powerful account of the No Kings 3 rally in Monticello on the Piatt County Courthouse Square. In her recurring, guest column, Letters from Birdland, Mary Lucille Hayes recounts the day and what it meant to stand together with over 200 fellow community members to “make good trouble.”

“We were there to say that tariffs have driven up prices of goods and endangered the markets for crops that Illinois farmers grow, like corn and soybeans. We were there to say no to an illegal war with Iran and to ask why we can find billions of dollars for war that kills Americans, kills innocent Iranians, and sends the price of gas soaring, but we can’t seem to find affordable healthcare.”

Thank you to Mary Lucille for attending and sharing her experience in the Piatt County Journal Republican.

The event in Monticello featured four speakers from Piatt County, including a biologist and community organizer, a mental health professional and a veteran.

Their experiences and concerns about how the Trump administration is negatively impacting the local community and the country were diverse, but they all shared one common message: it is important to use your voice and take action.”

This video from October No Kings 2 shows a few of the many things we love about our small town…

🏫 Local businesses on the historic square.

🌽 Grain elevators towering in the background.

⛽️ Casey’s General Store down the street.

🧍And of course, the people who make our community what it is.

We aren’t paid protestors. We are your neighbors. Parents of your kids’ friends, employees of your local bank, current and former teachers, veterans, and yes - Illini fans who will miss tip off tomorrow because we are standing up and speaking out…

For what?
…for a democracy that should work for all of us, not just the rich and powerful,
…for immigrants who deserve to be treated like human beings,
…for a future that isn’t endless war,
…for accountability for pedophiles,
…for affordable healthcare,
…for racial and environmental justice,
…for LGBTQ+ folks who just want to love who they love and be who they are,
…and for the land and water we all depend on.
