Privileged to play a small part in interpreting the Civil War service of Thomas B. Pope at the Newburgh Historical Society’s new exhibit honoring him. In addition to his service as a Lieutenant in Co. A of the 56th NYSV, the exhibit also tells the fascinating story of his life, including his careers as a newspaper columnist, local businessman, and his work as an artist of the Hudson River School. Be sure to stop by the Crawford house and check it out!

🎨 Step into the many lives of Thomas B. Pope at this year’s exhibit at the Crawford House.

Best known as one of Newburgh’s Hudson River School painters, Pope was far more than an artist. This exhibition explores his life and times through paintings from the HSNBH collection, select works on loan from private collectors, and artifacts, documents, and ephemera that help paint a fuller picture of a man deeply woven into a changing Newburgh.

Fireman, Civil War veteran, liquor store owner, photographer, journalist, magician, ice yachting enthusiast, and active community member, Thomas B. Pope lived many lives and left a lasting mark on our city.

With deep gratitude to HSNBH volunteers Kate Klein and Ava Rogers for curating this exhibit with such care. ✨
