What is a river basin?
You’ve probably heard the term, but what does it actually mean?
A river basin is the entire area of land that drains into a particular river. Think of it like a giant bowl: every raindrop that falls inside the rim eventually flows downhill...through creeks, streams, and tributaries...toward one main river.
🌀Key points about river basins:
~They include all the land, water, and ecosystems connected by that drainage system.
~Every river has its own basin, some small, some enormous (like the Mississippi).
~What happens upstream affects everything downstream. So, water quality, land use, and plant communities are deeply connected across the whole basin.
🌀Now, let’s talk Alabama:
~Alabama has several major river basins, and they are a big reason our state is one of the most biodiverse places in the country!
~From the rushing waters of the Tennessee River Basin in the north to the rich wetlands of the Mobile-Tensaw Delta in the south, these basins:
~Shape our geology and ecoregions
~Support hundreds of endemic and endangered species
~Feed forests, prairies, and marshes
~Provide drinking water, recreation, and habitat
🌀 Alabama's key basins:
~Tennessee River Basin (northern AL)
~Coosa & Tallapoosa River Basins (eastern/central AL)
~Black Warrior River Basin (north/central AL)
The Black Warrior Basin is the largest Watershed wholly within the state of Alabama!
~Sipsey & Warrior River Basins (western/central AL)
~Alabama & Cahaba (central AL)
The Cahaba River Basin is one of the most biologically rich (per river mile) in the U.S.!!!!
~Tombigbee/Mobile River Basins (southwestern AL)
(The Mobile Basin is not labeled on this map, but you can see it lined in light yellow on the gulf!)
The Mobile basin connects much of the state to the Gulf of Mexico.
~Conecuh River Basin (South/Central AL)
~Chattahoochee River Basin (Southeastern AL)
~Choctaw-hatchee River Basin (Southeastern AL)
🌿 Why does this matter to you?
Because YOU live in a river basin! And whether you’re planting native plants, conserving habitat, or just rinsing something down a storm drain......it’s all connected.
