MCB MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Meet Tracy Fowler!
What happens when you pick up the tuba again after a 45-year break? For Tracy Fowler, you join the Montgomery Community Band!
Tracy and his wife attended MCB’s very first concert. Afterward, he found himself wondering, “Would they want another tuba player?” He filled out an interest form—and the next thing he knew, he was part of the band.
There was just one small problem: he didn’t own a tuba yet. Tracy attended his first three or four rehearsals without an instrument!
Tracy started on euphonium in elementary school before switching to B-flat tuba in high school. Then came college, a career in engineering and R&D, marriage, raising a family and retirement—a “brief” 45-year break from the tuba. But he never left music behind, playing bass guitar in local and church bands along the way.
So what keeps him coming back to MCB each week?
“Two words: community and fun.”
For Tracy, MCB is about making music, building friendships and learning from people with all different levels of musical experience.
“No pretension, just a bunch of down-to-earth folks getting together to play music and prepare concerts for the Montgomery community. And, I get to play tuba. It doesn’t get much better than that!”
And Tracy isn’t slowing down. Since retiring, he’s taken up piano and is now in his sixth year of lessons.
As he puts it: “The music just keeps going!”
We’re glad it does—and we’re glad it brought Tracy to MCB for the last 3 years.
