Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2026 Mid-South RC&D Annual Meeting: Celebrating Chairman James Oliver Norris. We always enjoy gathering with our council members, state legislators, and community partners, but this event was especially sentimental for us. It was a perfect way to wish J.O. the best as he retires to spend more time with his loving wife, Judy.

At the annual meeting, Senator Clyde Chambliss, Senator Will Barfoot, and Senator Billy Beasley honored J.O. with a Interim Senate Resolution. Then, Elmore County Commissioner and Mid-South RC&D Council Member Desirae Jackson presented him with an Elmore County Commission Resolution. After these presentations, many friends and family filled the room with touching stories about J.O.’s years of service within Alabama RC&D.

This year, Franklin Volunteer Fire Department, Reeltown Volunteer Fire Department, Town of Notasulga, Macon County Schools, Tuskegee Stork's Nest, and Macon County Commission worked hard to enhance public safety, improve education programs, and invest in community beautification.

The Mid-South RC&D Council, Representative Pebblin Warren, county and city officials, and other locals gathered at the Jesse Upshaw Commission Chamber to celebrate the distribution of grant funds across six different entities, totaling $104,801.25.

Last week, Mid-South RC&D traveled to the Red Door Theater in Union Springs, Alabama. We visited with six Bullock County organizations making a difference in their communities.

The Bullock County School District supplied its medical laboratory with exam tables, stethoscopes, digital pressure monitors, vital sign stands, and beam scales. This increased healthcare students’ knowledge and comfort in using fundamental equipment by providing them with opportunities to practice in the classroom.

Conecuh Springs Christian School strengthened its library and physical education program by purchasing needed supplies for students. New books and shelving enhanced the school library, while children's sports equipment revitalized the school’s physical education program.

Fitzpatrick Volunteer Fire Department addressed the need for a multi-use wildland fire emergency response unit, which enables them to fight brush fires and reach individuals in areas that are inaccessible by other vehicles.

The City of Union Springs Community Center provided community members a safe space to exercise by outfitting its community center with a leg extension machine, a seated row machine, and a stair climber machine.

The Tourism Council of Bullock County enhanced the quality of productions and events at the Red Door Theater by replacing aging stage curtains with new professional-grade theater drapes.

The South Central Alabama Development Commission worked with a small team of industry experts and local business owners to collect and review data, identify issues and opportunities, and craft redevelopment recommendations for the City of Union Springs.

It’s hard to think of a better job than helping people meet the needs of their hometowns. Thank you, Senator Billy Beasley and Representative Barry Forte, for supporting FY26 projects that provide resources that address needs in areas like education, public safety, and community wellness.
